ERIK TEN HAG has explained the reason why Manchester United splashed out £13million to sign Tyrell Malacia.
The 22-year-old defender finally sealed his move to Old Trafford from Feyenoord this week.
United swooped for Malacia last week just when he looked destined to join French side Lyon.
And boss Ten Hag is over the moon to get the Dutch international as his first signing at the club.
Explaining why he wanted him, he told United’s website: “I think he’s the modern left-back or full-back.
“He suits the profile [we were looking for] and most important from every full-back is that he closes the right area.”

Malacia first caught Ten Hag’s eye when he was on the opposing team for Feyenoord against the manager’s old club Ajax.
The star has gone on to gain a reputation as a dynamic defender that contributes both to the backline as well as attack.
He grabbed five assists in Holland’s top-flight last term – and Ten Hag is expecting him to prove to be a real threat with United also.
He added: “He can also take part in the offensive side of our game, and he can do that really well.

“I think he will really contribute to the team.”
United headed to Thailand yesterday, without Cristiano Ronaldo, for their pre-season tour.
And Malacia could now make his debut against old foes Liverpool at the Rajamangala Stadium on Tuesday.
