Man Utd finally give up on Frenkie de Jong transfer pursuit… but WILL go back in for Barcelona star in future window | The Sun

MANCHESTER UNITED have accepted they will not be able to sign Frenkie de Jong before the transfer window closes tomorrow, according to reports.

Erik ten Hag has made five signings this summer after wrapping up an £85.5million deal for Antony.

Newcastle goalkeeper Martin Dubravka is expected to arrive on loan and the Slovak will likely be the final incoming of the transfer window.

De Jong was United's number one target for much of the summer and Barcelona even accepted a £72.5m bid for the midfielder.

But he rejected the opportunity to move to Old Trafford – leading United chiefs to sign Casemiro from Real Madrid instead.

However, the Red Devils are not giving up hope of capturing the Netherlands international and could attempt to sign him in future windows, report Goal.

But United's plans could be scuppered by other teams looking to buy De Jong.

Chelsea also tried to sign the Barca star this summer but could not agree a fee.

And now Bayern Munich have been credited with an interest in De Jong with reports claiming they were weighing up a loan move with an option to buy.

Despite that, Ten Hag has been able to shape a new-look midfield with Casemiro and Christian Eriksen set to line up for the first time together at Leicester today.

The United boss has also landed a key target in Lisandro Martinez, a player he knows very well, and in Tyrell Malacia he has a left-back to provide competition for Luke Shaw.

Barcelona's Sergio Dest also remains a target and there is an outside chance the club could complete a deal for the right-back before the window shuts.
