Matty Smith targets coaching job in the men's game – but ladies side comes first | The Sun

MATTY Smith hopes a woman’s touch can earn him a crack at coaching the men.

The former England international is currently in charge of St Helens’ female side, who just like the blokes are one step from Wembley.

A 38-0 whitewash of Warrington sealed a Challenge Cup semi-final against York Valkyrie, while Paul Wellens’ side – who he helps out – will face Leigh for a final spot.

And Smith, who starred for Saints and Wigan as a half back, believes this job can prepare him for a crack in Super League.

He said: “When I retired, I knew I wanted to go into coaching, I love the game and as a half back, I focused on what makes teams tick and how to beat them.

“I focused on the little things, so a natural progression was for me to coach really but I want to take my time. I’ve got a lot to learn,

“I know the game but in terms of management and how things work on the coaching front is something I need to take my time with.

“And what the women’s head coaching role gives me is I learn a bit quicker. I make decisions like picking teams and letting people down.
