Michael van Gerwen might not look the same after darts star undergoes surgery

Darts fans may have to get used to a Michael van Gerwen with a difference after the Dutchman underwent surgery.

A pre-planned operation following the Premier League, which he won, saw the three-time world champion miss the World Cup of Darts. He returned to action at the recent European Matchday tournament in Trier, Germany, where he was knocked out by fellow Dutch icon Raymond van Barneveld.

Since the match, Van Gerwen has taken to social media to open up about his surgery and the lengthy recovery time he needs.

“I would like to congratulate Raymond for his win over me in Trier. His finishing was brilliant,” he wrote on social media.

“After winning the Premier League Darts and US Darts Masters recently, I needed to have pre-planned dental and jaw surgery which meant I missed the World Cup of Darts.

“With the schedule being so busy, it's always hard to fit in anything like this, especially with an operation which involves a lot of recovery time.

“In my case, I might not look or sound the same for a little while and I'll also soon have braces fitted as well as needing further surgery in future.”

The Green Machine will be in action at the Poland Darts Masters this weekend before one of the biggest majors of the year, the World Matchplay in Blackpool, which begins on July 15.

Van Gerwen added: “I don’t want this to affect my performances in the Poland Darts Masters and World Matchplay coming up and I’ll be trying my best to win both events, but at the moment I’m also still recovering and hope that everyone can understand this. Thanks for your support, Michael.”
