Rafael Nadal sends message to French Open champion Novak Djokovic

Rafael Nadal has sent a message to Novak Djokovic after the Serbian won his 23rd Grand Slam title at the French Open on Sunday.

Djokovic beat Casper Ruud in the Roland-Garros final and has now overtaken Nadal for the most major men’s singles titles in history.

Nadal has been ruled out with injury since January and recently confirmed that 2024 is likely to be his final year in tennis before retirement.

Djokovic, 36, now has three more Grand Slam titles than Roger Federer, who retired last year with 20 major trophies.

Nadal has paid tribute to Djokovic as he posted on Twitter: ‘Many congrats on this amazing achievement @DjokerNole.

’23 is a number that just a few years back was impossible to think about, and you made it! Enjoy it with your family and team!’

Nadal was targeting a return from injury at this year’s French Open but was unable to compete and has subsequently undergone surgery.

The Spaniard is the most successful player in the history of Roland-Garros, winning a record 14 titles on the clay in Paris and was the defending champion.

He beat Ruud in last year’s final with the Norwegian now registering back-to-back runner-up finishes at the French Open.

Djokovic, meanwhile, has become the first man in the Open Era to secure three titles at each of the four majors.
