Brentford’s director of football Phil Giles has insisted the club’s decision to sign Romeo Beckham for their B team was made due to his ability and character, rather than as a PR stunt.
Romeo, the son of Manchester United and England legend David, made a loan switch to Brentford’s B team from Inter Miami in January.
The 20-year-old midfielder’s temporary move attracted significant attention due to his famous father.
Giles was asked on the High Performance Podcast about the decision to add Romeo to the squad and ensuring the move was not based around the potential value the Beckham name would bring.
The Brentford director of football admitted Romeo’s arrival generated more interest than arrival of Kevin Schade on loan just two days earlier, despite the German likely becoming the club’s record signing.

Giles insisted the decision had been taken due to Romeo adding to the B team environment through both his ability and as a character, with the midfielder earning praise for his work ethic since his arrival.
‘We brought Romeo in on a loan from Inter Miami for our B team and it was one of the most read stories that day on the website and Twitter,’ Giles said.
‘It wasn’t a PR stunt in any way.
‘The thought that went into Romeo is that we have relationships in football, he was looking for a place to train in England as he’s an Inter Miami player.
‘We said of course but still didn’t look past the process of, is he going to add to that environment as a player and as a character as well? Had he come in and been like, ‘I’m a Beckham,’ that would have been a disaster for us.
‘But he is not like that at all, he’s like his dad in that he is a humble guy with a good work ethic and wants to do extra hours on the training round. Sometimes he has to be held back a bit from that.
‘The fundamental point is it doesn’t matter if they are an experienced pro or a young player, the character has to be correct.’
Romeo has made 11 appearances for Neil MacFarlane’s Brentford’s B team across a series of friendlies and cup competitions, with his first goal coming against Wealdstone in the Middlesex Senior Cup in February.
Beckham is on loan at Brentford B until the end of the season from MLS side Inter Miami II
MacFarlane has spoke in praise of Beckham since his arrival on loan, having previously trained with the Bees ahead of the switch from his dad’s MLS side Inter Miami.
Senior team manager Thomas Frank has also spoken highly of the midfielder, insisting that he was signed ‘for a reason’ and not off the back of his famous dad.
Frank claimed Beckham should be viewed as his own player and be allowed to develop his game.
