SOUTHAMPTON have released TWELVE players after their relegation – including long-time servant Theo Walcott.

The Saints finished rock bottom in the Premier League, meaning they are back down in the Championship.

It has sparked a clearout at the club, with Walcott and Mohamed Elyounoussi among those leaving on a free in the summer.

A statement read: "Academy graduate Walcott, 34, leaves after two spells with the club, having returned to the team in 2020 – almost 15 years on from when he left St Mary’s to join Arsenal as a 16-year-old.

"In his most recent period with Southampton, he made 59 appearances and scored five goals, taking his overall total at Saints to 82 appearances and ten goals.

"Elyounoussi, who joined in 2018 from Swiss side Basel, leaves after playing 90 games and scoring nine times.

"The club would like to thank both Theo and Moi for their commitment and efforts throughout their time as Southampton players, and we wish both of them the very best for their future."

Walcott had already confirmed his departure in an emotional social media post.

He wrote: "I am really disappointed for the fans that we weren’t able to stay in the Premier League this season, but I am certain the club will be back there again soon.

"Thanks to all of you for your support right back to my debut aged 16 years old.
