The best pictures reflecting football's away day sleepers

A fan napping on the FLOOR of their coach after a defeat at Wembley, a prepared supporter with a pillow – and trainers and beer cans placed on unsuspecting heads! Meet the away day sleepers

  • The away day experience is one of the best parts of following your own team
  • However, it can be very tiring given the long journeys supporters have to make
  • The Away Day Sleepers account captures what the day can do to some fans

Football fans travel hundreds of miles across the country just to watch their side play – regardless of what day it is, how long it may take them to make the journey or how much it costs.

The away day experience is one of the very best parts of following your own team, even if it may involve setting your alarm for times of the morning which should never be seen – something Plymouth fans will be well aware of given they will have to travel a total of 5,572 miles to watch their side away from home across 23 games.

But still fans excitedly cram onto long coach and train journeys with some making the most out of the occasion with some pre-match food or enjoying some drinks along the way.

However, the day can get the better of some, and the Away Day Sleepers Twitter account has gone viral, with fans posting pictures of their friends and family members who are too tired to stay awake on their long journey – or perhaps just enjoyed one drink too many.

Here, MailSport takes a look at some of the best tweets capturing the away day sleepers.

The Away Day Sleepers Twitter account has gained traction on social media with people liking to embarrass their friends and family members by posting them having a nap online

Only the floor will do…

A trip to Wembley to watch your team play for a trophy is something that all avid football supporters dream of.

However, while the experience of the day might be one to remember, the result can sometimes be one to forget.

This is perhaps how Plymouth fans feel after their side lost 4-0 in the Papa Johns Trophy earlier this month.

The fan below is clearly feeling the effects of the day, given that he is pictured sleeping on the floor on his trip home on what can be up to a nine-hour round trip.

His head is lying on someone’s shoe, while another fan is resting their foot on the chair with their leg hanging over the sleepy supporter. Grade F in terms of comfort.

Fan takes ‘open-mouthed’ nap

This Chesterfield supporter would have got a rude surprise when he woke up from his innocent nap on the trip to Solihull and checked his Twitter.

Over 82,000 people viewed this tweet of the red-headed supporter sleeping, open mouthed, on his way to the National League game.

He probably would have felt just as tired after the match, as the two sides went on to reward this fan for what would have been a 144-mile-round trip with a goalless draw.

This Chesterfield fan was sleepy on the way to watch them play Solihull Moors, and wouldn’t have felt much more awake after the two National League sides played out a goalless draw

Ready for a big day?!

This picture of a Bolton fan travelling to Wembley would have been taken a few hours before the one of the Plymouth fan above.

The Bolton supporter is sprawled out across two seats and looks very relaxed ahead of the big match.

It would be a surprise if they were still like this on the journey home, given their success at Wembley.

Bolton fans will have enjoyed the trip to Wembley even more given their 4-0 win on the day

That has to be uncomfortable?

While one person has the comfort of lying across two chairs on the 250 mile journey from Carrow Road back to Sunderland, one supporter of the Black Cats has also decided that the floor is more comfortable.

This fan is seen resting his head against the side of the train on the way back from a successful 1-0 away victory at Norwich.

Sunderland fans would have had good reason to be tired if they decided to do the the 10-hour round-trip on the day – given that the match kicked off at noon.

Missing the party!

This supporter would have had to get up extremely early for the four-hour trip to see Leeds play Fulham in a 12:30pm kick-off.

It’s clear that the group had plans to enjoy a few drinks on the way to Craven Cottage given the array of Kopparberg, Desperados and other alcoholic beverages lined up on the table.

However, this supporter was not ready for alcohol just yet, as he takes a nap with his head in his hand and the cans left unopened in front of him.

Sleeping beauties!

These two Ipswich fans made the most out of the space on the train as they both slept stretched out across two seats.

The pair though are lying very close to the edge of the seats, so some heavy breaking from the train could have easily seen them end up on the floor.

The one fan on the right even has stretched out so much his feet are on the chairs on the opposite side of the train, so anybody hoping to go past would have had an obstacle course on their hands.

Travelling each way between the two clubs can take over two hours, and these Ipswich fans were returning following a 1-1 draw in League One.

All shoe much…

This fan must have been extremely tired as he didn’t appear to notice at least seven shoes sitting on his back and head.

A popular theme of the away day banter on the commute to stadiums appears to be placing as many items on someone sleeping as possible, without them waking up.

The Aberdeen fan was taking a snooze with his head up against the chair in front of him, and those around him made sure to take full advantage of the opportunity.

It is a trip which is roughly three hours each way, and on this day Aberdeen went on to lose 2-1 to Rangers in the Scottish League Cup.

Unsuspecting dress-up

The work of those sitting around this Hull City fan is just as impressive as those with the Aberdeen fan above.

Appearing to have a scarf around their eyes, three trainers were placed on the left side of their head while other items were put on top of their head, which was against the window of the vehicle.

The Hull fan would have been very shocked to wake up to discover the items placed on him.

The drive from Hull to Stoke can be two-and-a-half hours on a good day with traffic, and the supporter travelled all that way to witness a goalless draw.

People sitting around this Hull City fan also managed to not wake them up despite placing shoes and other items on their head

Booze snooze

This fan was tired even on what was a relatively short trip for Crystal Palace when they played Arsenal in a 2pm kick-off last month.

They have a four-pack of beers placed on their head as they sleep against the window, which is again impressive work from the culprit who did this given the weight of the cans.

A green bottle has also been placed on their shoulder against their head on the journey to the Emirates.

Palace suffered a heavy defeat on the day as title challengers Arsenal romped to a 4-1 victory.

No pillow talk!

One York City fan came prepared on their journey for a recent National League match away at Chesterfield.

They must have planned to go to sleep on the coach to Chesterfield as they brought a pillow so they could have a comfortable kip on the journey, a three-hour round trip by road.

Those who have fallen asleep on journeys will know how uncomfortable they can be, so this fan is clearly one step ahead of the rest.

They had a reason to celebrate later that day as York City claimed a 3-1 victory.

Snooze you lose

This picture shows the dangers of falling asleep on public transport when surrounded by football fans if you’re wearing a coat with a hood.

This Sunderland supporter had what looks to be a of rubbish dumped into his hood as they enjoy their sleep.

Let’s just hope he noticed the rubbish before putting his hood up if it was raining when he got back to Sunderland that day!

It’s no surprise that they were fast asleep after the 1-1 draw, given that a round-trip between Sunderland and Millwall comes up to to 566 miles and about ten hours on road.

Pick us a winner!

Our final inclusion comes from West Ham’s trip to Belgian side Genk in the Europa Conference League on Thursday.

If a finger up his nose from their generous friend or family member didn’t wake them up, then they are a serious deep sleeper.
