West Ham hold talks over loan transfer for Southampton's Bednarek as replacement for Wolves and Villa target Dawson | The Sun

WEST HAM have held talks over a loan move for Southampton's Jan Bednarek should Craig Dawson depart.

The Hammers have received approaches from both Wolves and Aston Villa for Dawson, who has fallen down the pecking order following the summer window.

Manager David Moyes has added both Nayef Aguerd and Thilo Kehrer from Rennes and Paris Saint-Germain respectively, while Angelo Ogbonna is also returning to fitness.

While Issa Diop has joined Fulham, the arrival of full-back Emerson Palmieri from Chelsea means Aaron Cresswell will more often be used as a central defender.

Dawson, who has been a key figure for Moyes over the past two years following his move from Watford, is keen to play more regularly.

The Hammers boss will make a call on his future before Thursday's deadline.

Poland international Bednarek, 26, could be allowed to leave St. Mary's Stadium having himself found game time hard to come by.

Mohammed Salisu and Armel Bella-Kotchap are Ralph Hasenhuttl's first choice pairing and the Austrian is happy to let either Bednarek or Jack Stephens leave the south coast club this week.

Should the Pole leave, the Saints would want any agreement to include an option or obligation to buy, considering the defender has a contract until 2025.

Bednarek has made 153 Southampton appearances since joining the club from Lech Poznan in 2017.

Everton's Michael Keane has also been discussed by West Ham but is much less likely than a move for Bednarek.

West Ham's two defensive arrivals have had contrasting starts so far.

Aguerd picked up an ankle injury before the beginning of the season that leaves him set for a long spell on the sidelines.

Meanwhile, Kehrer gave away a penalty on his West Ham debut as they lost to Brighton earlier this month
