Nathan Aspinall couldn’t hide his anger after being targeted by whistles during his Premier League Darts defeat to Michael Smith in Berlin.
After defeating Chris Dobey in his quarter-final, The Asp was pitted against the reigning world champion. And an ominous task was made even harder when he was subjected to whistles on several occasions just as he was about to throw.
After two darts of one visit, he snapped, remonstrating with the audience while the referee also stepped in, in an attempt to restore order. On Sky Sports commentary, Mark Webster said: “It’s not like Nathan, so there must be something in it.”

Co-commentator Stuart Pike added: “There was clearly a whistle. The referee went over as well to have a word. Unnecessary [from the member of the crowd].”
Fellow commentator Dan Dawson, who was also on duty in the German capital, later tweeted his thoughts on the matter: “If you're at a live darts event, and the person next to you is whistling when a player is throwing, tell them from me that they're a d*******.”
Many fans echoesd his sentiments, with one adding: “Quality game like this as well, both players enjoying it and then you get w****** in the crowd disrupting both players’ rhythm. So frustrating.”

Another said: “Your mission is my command.” A third agreed: “It’s happening more and more and it’s not on.”
It’s debatable whether the incident had a bearing on the outcome, which Smith won 6-4, with Aspinall sportingly embracing his rival after the match. Smith went on to lose the final 6-4 to Jonny Clayton, who got his play-off challenge back on track. The Welshman overcame Michael van Gerwen and Gerwyn Price earlier in the night.
