Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova paid tribute to her husband after winning her first ever grand slam title.

The world No 42 became the first unseeded woman to win the championship in the open era on Saturday as she upset Ons Jabeur in the final to lift the trophy in straight sets.

Her husband, Stepan Simek made it to SW19 for the final after staying at home to cat sit, but it was said at the pot-match ceremony that he had found someone else to do the job so he could be present for his partner’s big day.

They will celebrate their first wedding anniversary on Sunday, but it’s not the only event on the Czech’s calendar after she revealed a bet she agreed with her coach prior to the tournament.

A lover of tattoos, Vondrousova revealed that she would be getting matching tattoos with her coach, Jan Mertl, with plans to head off to get the tattoo on her anniversary.

‘It’s amazing, tomorrow is our first wedding anniversary,’ the 24-year-old said of her husband making the game. ‘It is amazing to have you guys being here with me.

‘I have enjoyed these two weeks so much. it has been exhausting but I am so grateful and proud of myself.

‘I made a bet with my coach that if I won a grand slam he’s going to get one also. I think we’ll go tomorrow.

‘I think I’m going to have some beer. It’s been an exhausting few weeks. I just tried to get myself together for the last few day. I was so nervous before the game and I am really grateful. thank you everyone for the support and coming here.

She also admitted that she wasn’t sure if she’d be able to reach the top level again after undergoing surgery last year and attending Wimbledon in a cast as a spectator.

After reaching a career-high rank of 14 and reaching the French Open final in 2019, she struggled to reach the same heights but is now back on track with her first major title.

‘Ons, congratulations, you’re such an inspiration for all of us, I hope you are going to win one day. You are an amazing person and congrats guys, you are doing an amazing job.

‘After everything I’ve been through… had a cast on this time last year. It is amazing that I can stand here and hold this. This is crazy.

‘The comebacks aren’t easy. You never know what to expect. I was hoping I could come back at this level and now this is happening. Thank you to my box. You are all amazing. My little sister is crying!’
