One of the first things that Max Turner (Paddy Bever) did when he returned to Coronation Street from the STC was fulfil a promise he made to his friend Gav (Noah Olaoye). With Gav still in prison he wanted Max to give a message to his girlfriend Bec.
Max’s mission was to smooth over the relationship between Gav and Bec, and persuade her to take calls from her boyfriend, who she’s been ignoring.
When he met Bec it didn’t quite work out like that, though, as she soon informed him that she and Gav were history.
What’s more, she told Max she now sees him as her boyfriend, and kissed him to seal the deal.
When Shona (Julia Goulding) and David (Jack P. Shepherd) quizzed Max about his new girlfriend, Max was uncomfortable and admitted that because Bec is of mixed race she might dump him when she finds out about his previous involvement in the racist far-right gang.
David advised Max to steer clear of the situation, particularly as she was Gav’s girlfriend, but Max has never been great at taking advice from David and met up with Bec again.
If Max wants his relationship with Bec to continue, there’s a massive issue to confront and that’s the uncomfortable truth about the trouble he got into that led him to being in the STC.
His involvement in the far right gang saw him helping to make propaganda videos for the group’s social media as the group became ever more extreme and violent. This eventually led to Alya (Sair Khan) being stabbed in Speed Daal.
Since the attack she’s suffered months of trauma, and Max isn’t supposed to go anywhere near her under the terms of his license.
And it’s Alya who talks to Bec about Max’s past before Max has a chance to explain to his girlfriend and persuade her that he’s truly a changed man.
‘In prison he does feel like a criminal because he’s in an STC, but the other people there have done something wrong as well.
When he comes out, he knows he’s going to be singled out, he’s on his own and he’s there to be made an example of, particularly by Alya,’ Paddy Bever told us.
And with Alya’s warnings about Max ringing in her ears, Bec demands to know – exactly when was Max planning on telling her he’s a terrorist?
In a tense video clip, Max is taken aback – and there is some serious explaining to do.
Can Max convince her he’s changed and he’s worthy of her? Or has Alya destroyed his new relationship?
