Another controversial documentary has shocked Netflix subscribers this week as never-before-seen footage from the 1993 assault in Waco was revealed in the three-part series, American Apocalypse. Former member of the Branch Davidians Heather Jones was among those interviewed for the series, and she recalled a tragic scene which still leaves her in tears 30 years on.
Jones’ eyes were flooded with tears as she recalled the death of her grandfather during the siege of ‘93 in the new Netflix documentary.
The three-part series sheds more light on the horrific moment in American history sparked by an ATF raid on cult leader David Koresh.
Alerted to a stockpile of illegal firearms, the agents swarmed Koresh’s compound in Waco, Texas, and a shootout began when gunshots were heard, though it’s unclear which side shot first.
Jones recalled the complete panic which set inside the compound as bullets started piercing the walls.
“I didn’t know what was going on, really, most of the time,” she said.
“I just knew that everybody was scared, and people were getting hurt.”
Among those injured in the initial attack was Jones’ grandfather, Perry Jones, who survived the gunfire but with a severe injury.
“The screaming I heard,” she tried to continue as her voice cracked with tears. “Was my grandfather crawling down the hallway.”
Fellow survivor David Thibodeau added: “Perry had gotten shot in the stomach, and went down screaming from a stomach wound.
“And he kept yelling to be out of his misery. And this went on for a long time.”
Jones remembered her grandfather “begging” to be killed, while another member Kathy Schroeder claimed an unnamed member of the Davidians took his life to stop his suffering.
“He was begging for somebody to kill him,” Jones cried. “And they did.”

“It wasn’t that Perry died from his gunshot wound,” Schroeder confirmed.
“It was that Perry was removed from the Earth so that he would not have to suffer anymore. We finished Perry off.”
Schroeder revealed cult leader Koresh was also amongst those injured, though he was lucid enough to engage in hostage negotiations with the ATF agents outside.
Unfortunately, the gruelling event culminated in another assault on the compound which left many more members dead.
Three separate fires broke out at the centre during the final assault, which the government maintains were started deliberately by the Branch Davidians.
Only nine people were able to leave the building, while the rest, including Koresh, perished inside.
A total of 86 people were killed during the siege, including four ATF agents, and many more were wounded.
