Ever since the morning she woke up and realised that Aaron Sandford (James Craven) had raped her while she was barely conscious and unable to consent to sex, Amy Barlow’s life has been turned upside down in Coronation Street.
Bravely she eventually managed to tell her parents what had happened and they encouraged her to go to the police, but since then Amy has felt any control she had over the situation slipping away.
Thanks to Tracy (Kate Ford)’s action in printing up flyers about Aaron, it wasn’t long before Peter (Chris Gascoyne) realised what had happened and Amy was devastated that more people had found out about her ordeal. Meanwhile Tracy was determined to get justice for her daughter and even resorted to gluing her hands to the counter at the police station to draw attention to the case – and the very last thing Amy wanted was attention drawing to what had happened.
The pressure of all this made her change her story about what had occurred on the night of the rape, saying that she wasn’t raped and just overreacted.
Aaron was obviously relieved that Amy had changed her story, not understanding the huge emotional strain that had caused her to have the apparent change of heart. This only compounded Amy’s suffering when it seemed that Aaron was carrying on with his life as normal while she was left feeling that her life had changed forever as she tried to deal with her trauma alone.
This is a situation that’s only set to get worse in upcoming episodes as Aaron is constantly around wherever Amy is.
When she and Asha (Tanisha Gorey) decide to organise a surprise 21st birthday party for Nina (Mollie Gallagher), it’s something that Amy can get involved in and enjoy with her friends. But then Aaron overhears Asha and Aadi (Adam Hussain) talking about the party – and he invites himself along.
How will Amy react when he turns up at the party? And will anyone realise that Amy is still struggling?
