BBC Breakfast’s Sally Nugent fiercely shuts down MP during heated TV debate

BBC Breakfast’s Sally Nugent fiercely shut down MP Steve Barclay during a heated debate over the rising health risks on the Bibby Stockholm barge in Dorset.

During Monday’s (August 14) visit to the BBC studios, the 52-year-old woke up the nation on the signature red sofa with her co-host Jon Kay with the latest headlines in the news.

One of the biggest stories this week is the ongoing health risk on the barge which is part of the government’s migration policy intended to cut the cost of housing asylum seekers.

Over the weekend, all migrants have been removed from the ship after traces of Legionella bacteria were found in the on-board water system.

The Home Office said all 39 migrants on board the vessel in Dorset were disembarked as a precaution until the health concerns are resolved.

The Legionella bacteria, which is commonly found in water, can cause a serious type of lung infection known as Legionnaires’ disease which is a type of pneumonia.

With the situation still developing, the presenting duo welcomed the Health and Social Care minister onto the morning show to get a better understanding of the situation.

She asked him: "When did you know there was a risk of Legionella on the barge? You've spoken about barges, on the Bibby Stockholm – when did you hear about that?"

The politician replied: "Well ministers were made aware of that on Thursday evening (August 10) and obviously that's been discussed with the council in terms of the importance of that information coming across quicker.

"So ministers were aware on Thursday evening," he explained.

The broadcaster pointed out: "Dorset Council say they told a Home Office contractor on Monday night (August 7)."

The politician went on: "Well as Health Secretary, I wouldn't be sited on when somebody had been notified or not, but I know in terms of Home Office ministers that they were notified on Thursday evening and took action on a precautionary basis.

Sally made sure not to hold any prisoners, as she continued with her line of questioning, adding: "Don't you think that feels like quite a long time though? Health is your brief, you would know how dangerous Legionella is."
