BBC viewers slam Trooping the Colour coverage over ‘ridiculous’ schedule change

Trooping the Colour: Prince George speaks with Kate Middleton

For over 200 years, the Trooping of the Colour has marked the official birthday of the British monarch with 2023 being King Charles III’s first birthday parade.

Being shown on BBC One and BBC News from 10:30am, viewers saw the royal ride on horseback, the first time a reigning monarch has done so since 1986.

As the historic event was set to last nearly three hours, the broadcaster had to make some changes to its regular TV schedule in order to cover the celebration.

However, with it dominating the flagship channels, as well as taking over the red button, people were less than impressed.

Taking to Twitter to share their thoughts, @HonestJ13162013 asked: “#TroopingtheColour Any reason why it’s on BBC one and @BBCNews? How about some news please.”

While @Surfwagen urged others to look elsewhere: “BBC isn’t the only coverage and there are others live on YouTube which actually focuses on #TroopingtheColour without the inevitable BBC angle.”

Craig Woodburn was also displeased with the volume of coverage, tweeting: “Barbara Slater / Tim Davie, Trooping the Colour is on BBC. I see it is also on BBC Red Button 1 HD, the Nottingham tennis starts at 11am but not on RB1.

“Why on earth do you do this? if I want to see TTC I watch it on BBC1, no need to have it on RB1 @BBCSport. Ridiculous.”

Elsewhere, Edmund Gubbins questioned: “Why have the BBC got trooping the colour on both BBC1 and the red button when it is scheduled to have Nottingham tennis on the red button?”

While John Walker shared their opinion: “Why are BBC & Sky News covering so much of trooping the colour? It’s very boring.”

However, it seemed @jannycat enjoyed the coverage as she tweeted: “What a spectacle! So, so proud of our amazing troops.” (sic)

During the ceremony, fans were treated to over 1,400 soldiers parading along with 200 horses.

To celebrate the King’s birthday, a flypast will see the likes of Spitfires and the Red Arrows take to the skies as the royals watch from the Buckingham Palace balcony.

BBC viewers also saw Prince William and Kate Middleton’s three children at the start of the parade waving to crowds from their carriage.

A rundown of the event is explained on the official royal site which reads: “Once the Sovereign has arrived at Horse Guards Parade in Whitehall, they are greeted by a Royal salute and carry out an inspection of the troops, who are fully trained and operational soldiers wearing the ceremonial uniform of red tunics and bearskin hats.

“After the military bands have performed, the escorted Regimental Colour, or flag, is processed down the ranks of soldiers. Over one hundred words of command are used by the Officer in Command of the Parade to direct the several hundred soldiers.

“Once the Foot Guards have marched past the Sovereign, they ride back to Buckingham Palace at the head of the soldiers, before taking the salute again at the Palace from a dais. “

Trooping the Colour is available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
