The iconic reality television show Big Brother has returned to our screens after a hiatus, and fans are eager to know whether contestants will be allowed to consume alcohol while on the show.
Big Brother first captivated audiences when it aired on Channel 4 in 2000, running for a decade before transitioning to Channel 5 from 2011 to 2018.
In 2018, the show bid farewell, but last weekend it made a triumphant return on ITV with new hosts AJ Odudu and Will Best.
With several changes planned for the revamped Big Brother, one question on viewers' minds is the alcohol policy.
This year's initial 16 participants walked into a Big Brother house almost completely dry of alcohol, and they made their grievances known after being presented with just two of Prosecco between them (plus mocktails).
"Did they think two bottles of prosecco was gonna last?" questioned dancer Olivia, before youth worker Hallie said: "I need a drink!"
While reports suggest that contestants will have access to some alcoholic beverages on the show, it appears that the rules regarding alcohol have become stricter compared to previous seasons.
A source revealed to The Mirror: "The booze used to flow in Big Brother, but obviously times have changed a lot since it was last on air.
“There are certainly going to be stricter welfare measures in place than in previous iterations, but bosses are confident they won’t have to stick to the same rules as Love Islanders have to.”
On Love Island, contestants are typically limited to two alcoholic drinks per day. However, the alcohol policy on Big Brother is expected to differ somewhat.
The source added: "There will be a much broader age range of contestants, and less focus on them forming romantic relationships with each other. As long as their welfare is taken care of, they should be able to enjoy a few boozy gatherings without any problems."
An ITV source told The Mirror that the alcohol protocol is still being finalised and will be closely monitored to ensure the well-being of contestants throughout the show.
With Big Brother's return imminent, viewers can anticipate an exciting season with new rules and a fresh approach to the reality TV classic.
Ahead of the live episodes airing, AJ (real name Onatejiro), 35, revealed that she doesn't want to emulate previous Big Brother hosts Davina McCall or Emma Willis.
"I certainly don’t feel like I’m going to be stepping into anyone’s shoes. I absolutely adore Davina McCall, and the same goes for Emma Willis, who is actually a really good friend of mine. I don’t want to be like Davina or Emma. I just want to be like me," she shared.
"I hope everyone is ready to see someone who’s never looked like me, never sounded like me and never been like me on their screens hosting such an iconic show. I’m nervous. I’ve got butterflies taking on such a big role, but I’m really excited."
