The Dwayne Johnson-starring DC superhero pic maintains its top spot at the domestic chart, though horror movies claim three spots in the top five on the Halloweekend.
AceShowbiz -“Black Adam” is unbeatable at the North American box office amid horror fare. The DC superhero movie starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson as the titular character still occupies the first place on the rank on so-so Halloween weekend.
The Jaume Collet-Serra-directed pic bagged an estimated $27.7 million on its second weekend, dropping 58% from its debut weekend. It’s uncommon though to see a superhero film falling off 60% or more domestically if opening north of $100 million.
Projected to finish Sunday with a domestic cume of $111.1 million so far, “Black Adam” has set a new record as a movie that hit $100 million faster than any DCEU film since “Aquaman” (2018). Celebrating the feat, the wrestler-turned-actor tweeted, “Whoa. Great news that lands on my cheat day Thank you everyone so much for this. Super grateful.”
Thanks to Johnson’s star power overseas, “Black Adam” declined just 45 percent at the international box office to $39 million for a foreign tally of $139 million and $250 million globally.
“Ticket to Paradise“, which reunites “Ocean’s Eleven” and “Money Monster” co-stars George Clooney and Julia Roberts, also holds on to the runner-up place with approximately $10 million.
While a horror movie fails to topple “Black Adam”, three horror films dominate the top five, starting off with “Prey for the Devil“, which opens in third place with a decent $7 million from 2,980 theaters. It’s the only of the three horror films rated PG-13 rather than R.
“Smile” drops one place to No. 4 with an estimated $5 million, while “Halloween Ends” also slips to No. 5 with approximately $3.8 million.
“This is just another mandate in favor of horror,” says Paul Dergarabedian, Comscore’s senior media analyst. “It’s not just about being in October, horror movies have played well throughout the pandemic. It’s a genre that continues to kill it at the box office time and again.”
