Today, at 10pm on Channel 5, Kevin Costner stars in the wonderful romantic thriller movie The Bodyguard. The film shows him protecting American icon Whitney Houston before falling in love with her on the big screen. But after the movie was released and deemed hugely successful – earning more than $410 million at the box office – Costner began ironing out the details for a sequel. And this time around, he wanted to include Princess Diana.

Yes, believe it or not, Costner had been in contact with Diana, the Princess of Wales, to revisit the world of The Bodyguard and tell a story “loosely based on her life”.

Costner opened up about the project in 2012. He said “the studio liked the idea of doing a Bodyguard 2” with Diana appearing as the new love interest for the movie.

He added she would take on a role “in the same kind of capacity as Whitney”. He also revealed that “nobody really knew that for about a year”.

Costner revealed that his character, Frank Farmer, a professional bodyguard, would have been “protecting Diana’s character from stalkers and paparazzi before their relationship inevitably turned romantic”.

Costner remembered speaking with Diana candidly about working with him on the big-screen project.

He said: “I just remember her being incredibly sweet on the phone, and she asked the question: ‘Are we going to have, like a kissing scene?’ She said it in a very respectful [way].”

The Dances With Wolves star explained that Princess Diana was “a little nervous” because her life was “very governed” at the time.

“I said: ‘Yeah,'” Costner went on. “‘There’s going to be a little bit of [kissing], but we can make that okay too.'” (Via People)

Princess Diana eventually asked Costner to come back and discuss the script with him once her dramatic life had begun to calm down.

At the time, Princess Diana was going through a messy divorce from the then-Prince, now-King Charles. As a result, she told Costner: “Look, my life is maybe going to become my own at some point. Go ahead and do this script, and when it’s ready I’ll be in a really good spot.”

Costner also claimed he received help connecting with Princess Diana from Sarah Ferguson, the Duchess of York.

Costner announced: “Sarah was really important. I always respect Sarah because she’s the one that set up the conversation between me and Diana. And she never said: ‘Well, what about me? I’m a princess too.’ She was just so supportive of the idea.”

Unfortunately, the film never saw the light of day. The first few scripts were reportedly written up with Diana in mind, and Costner’s full support, but tragedy struck.

Costner reportedly received the second draft of the script the day before Diana was killed in a car crash on August 31, 1997.

He later said of the royal’s death: “When we lost her, that was tragic. Incredibly tragic. And private to me, actually. I didn’t talk about it for a year, and somebody else talked about it and that’s how that story bubbled up a while ago. There was a little discrepancy about whether it was true or not, and we worked our way through that.”

The Bodyguard is due to hit Channel 5 screens at 10pm.
