On Monday morning, Royal editor Russell Myers joined Lorraine Kelly on ITV to discuss King Charles’ upcoming crowning. He suggested the crowning ceremony could look more streamlined than Queen Elizabeth’s as a result of the cost of living crisis.

Following Queen Elizabeth’s state funeral and the end of the national mourning period, the Royal family are moving forward with plans for King Charles’ coronation.

The monarch will be crowned in a series of days of celebration to mark the official start of his reign, although he ascended the throne after his mother’s death in September.

Speaking on the highly anticipated event, Russell told Lorraine: “We can expect it to be around June, summertime.

“A couple of dates have been mentioned, June 2nd which would tie in with his mother’s 70th anniversary of her coronation in 1953.”

He added: “But, King Charles apparently wants a very streamlined coronation, potentially to do with the cost of living crisis.

“He’s very aware of the fact that a man prancing around in a jewelled crown is probably not the best look when everybody is struggling to pay their bills at the moment.”

“What will it look like? I’m told that it will be a bit more streamlined, there’s some reports saying they will reduce the guest list from about 8,000 down to 2,000.

The experts shared that the celebration could also “go down from about three hours to one hour”.

“So I think this is potentially a good idea but obviously some people are saying that because of the Queen’s platinum jubilee, where we saw the golden state carriage which was magnificent,” he continued.

“It had been refurbished quite a lot, some people are saying that we can show off the splendour of Britain in one of these big majestic occasions

Russell continued: “But I don’t know, a big debate I think.”

King Charles’ coronation will come 70 years after Queen Elizabeth was officially crowned at the age of 27.

Before that, her father King George VI’s coronation ceremony took place in 1937 when she was just 11 years old.

It has been reported King Charles’ coronation will take place at Westminister Abbey alongside his wife Camilla, Queen Consort.

As the monarch will turn 74 in June 2023, he will officially become the oldest person to be crowned King in British history.

His son, Prince William is also expected to play an important role in organising King Charles’ coronation celebrations.

Reports of a trimmed-down coronation were echoed by Lieutenant Colonel Anthony Mather.

He had begun the original plan for King Charles’s coronation and revealed: “The same with MPs: they won’t all be present because he’s not being crowned for them. He’s being crowned for the people.”

A source told the Mail on Sunday that certain rituals may not be performed at the coronation ceremony, such as the tradition to present the monarch with gold before placing it on the altar.

Lorraine airs on weekdays on ITV at 9am
