It’s been confirmed that we will be saying goodbye to Spider Nugent once more in Coronation Street as Martin Hancock leaves the role.
Spider returned last year as part of the storyline that saw Max Turner (Paddy Bever) groomed and manipulated by Griff (Michael Condron), the leader of an extremism gang.
For months, the Weatherfield residents were led to believe that Spider was a part of the group which shocked them, given that he was so passionate about the saving the environment and believing that it’s always important to do right by the world when he was last on the cobbles.
Fortunately, Spider hadn’t changed completely as he was revealed to be an undercover police officer, working within Griff’s gang to gather information and feed it back to his colleagues.
Spider was successful in helping bring down the group and has spent the last few months living a quieter life with partner Toyah (Georgia Taylor).
On Monday (July 17), however, things drastically changed.
When a lady called Maggie entered the flat, pretending to be Spider’s wife, Toyah was left in danger when she kidnapped her.

As Spider worked out who had taken Toyah, he found them both at a wasteground. Toyah was gagged and in the back of a van, and Maggie was holding a gun, revealing herself to be the wife of a man Spider helped destroy on a previous job.
The traumatic ordeal resulted in the gun going off and Spider being knocked to the ground. For a few moments, it looked as though he was dead, but he confirmed to a terrified Toyah that he was wearing a bulletproof vest.
The situation saw Toyah ask Spider to quit his job as an undercover cop, convinced that he should put their relationship first.
Sadly, Spider couldn’t, which left Toyah with no choice but to end their time together.
With Spider already being told that he needs to leave Weatherfield for a new job and protection purposes, it won’t be long until we say goodbye to the beloved face once more.
‘I’ve enjoyed it immensely coming back, it’s been great’, Martin Hancock said.
‘When I was younger I was probably a bit too enamoured of the party scene [laughs]. It’s nice to come back as an older and wiser person and really enjoy it for what it is which is a great show with great people. I’ve really enjoyed it.
‘The best thing about coming back to the Street this time is the same as last time – it’s the people. You see the security team when you’re back through the gate, you bounce up past the press office and wave hello.
‘There’s a lot of bouncing around goes on. There is a lovely atmosphere on this show. The crew are funny, they’re hilarious.
‘Considering the amount of pressure that’s on them and the hours they work, they are a funny bunch. I love all that and the green room’s great.’
‘Life’s gone wrong between them!’, he sighed, reflecting on the sad end to Spider and Toyah’s relationship.
‘It’s just bad luck and circumstance, isn’t it? What’s been happening previously in Spider’s life, what’s been happening previously in Toyah’s life, have conspired to do them down at the end. It’s sad. They’re both very committed people, but for now it’s just not workable.
Martin explained that he knows Spider will be devastated to leave Toyah, as the characters have shared so much together since Spider’s arrival over 20 years ago.
‘I think he’ll be desperately sad about the way things have ended’, he said.
‘At the end of the day, whatever version of Spider we’re talking about, Spider loves Toyah. So he’s bound to feel sad. They’re both going to feel sad. There’s something between those two. It’s a 25 year relationship, of course they’re going to feel gutted that they couldn’t make it work this time.’
Reflecting on Spider’s decision to leave, Martin wonders what the future may hold if we were to see his alter-ego again.
‘The thing with Spider is he’s such a hot-head. He loves a good old cause and he does want to change the world’, he laughed.
‘I think this time round it’s possibly a bit of a wake-up call for Spider. I think he realises that actually there’s something to sticking around and staying in one place.
‘His younger self wouldn’t have thought that. The great irony is his older self realises that he does want to stay in Weatherfield but unfortunately his younger self’s actions have dragged him away.
‘I would like to think he’s leaving with unfinished business. From chatting with people I think perhaps maybe not immediately, but I think there is some unfinished business…’.
