Coronation Street fans have been concerned for the welfare of Audrey Roberts (played by Sue Nicholls) after her son Stephen Reid (Todd Boyce) finally got his hands on the money he has been eyeing up since his arrival in Weatherfield. However, after handing over the money he owed to his ex-wife Gabrielle (Helene Maksoud), Audrey revealed she was going to enquire about an equity release on her home. Scrambling for help, Stephen once again turned to Gabrielle for help but she left him in the dust before leaving. However, fans have become concerned they haven’t seen the last of Gabrielle and fear she is Stephen’s next victim.
Last week Stephen forced Gabrielle to help him get his hands on Audrey’s money by impersonating his mother to the mortgage broker.
As they celebrated in the pub, Stephen handed over the £200,000 he owed to Gabrielle before revealing he was planning to get out of the country.
However, his plans were ruined when Audrey revealed she herself wanted to release her equity for her house to be able to take grandson Sam Blakeman (Jude Riordan) to see the Northern Lights.
Panicking he was going to be caught out, Stephen begged Gabrielle for her help, but she had finally had enough of his games and told him to sort it himself.
After many attempts to let him pay for the trip, Audrey finally gave in and thanked Stephen for being so “generous” with his money.
During Friday’s episode, Audrey began to feel bad about taking the money from Stephen and suggested they could see the Northern Lights in Canada and stay in one of his properties to save money.
Stephen was thrown into panic and in a bid to scupper Audrey and Sam’s Canadian plans, he convinced Gail Platt (Helen Worth) the weather is too harsh for them and they’d be better off in Norway on a cruise and he will book it.
Gabrielle said her goodbyes to the family before heading out of Weatherfield with most of Audrey’s money, but is this the last fans will see of her?
Coronation Street fans and hosts of the podcast Conversation Street, Michael and Gemma recently discussed Gabrielle’s departure and theorised they hadn’t seen the end of her.
Michael expressed: “In a way, I am glad that Gabrielle is going because I have quite enjoyed her in the show and everything.
“But I have got also very fed up with all these scenes of her and Stephen meeting up secretly together, it seems like every other scene in this story is just them meeting up in some no so secret location.
“But I am honestly very surprised that he hasn’t bumped her off, he might do still!”
Gemma interjected and expressed: “I am not convinced she is not going to make it out of this story alive!”
Michael continued: “I think that maybe the story is on ice for a little bit, and she is going to come back at some point in the future and he is going to finish her off then maybe?”
“Maybe she will come back at Christmas?” Gemma theorised. “She is lonely and has all this money and she wants to buy everyone a present…”
Discussing how much they have enjoyed the storyline, Michael admitted: “I am still enjoying the story, well, I think I am but I am seeing a lot of hatred for it online.
“I don’t know whether I am actually enjoying it or whether I am just telling myself I am enjoying it because I like this type of story in general.”
Stephen has already killed once before, bumping off Leo Thompkins (Joe Frost) after he got close to exposing the conman for his true intentions.
If Gabrielle runs out of money, she could return and demand more from Stephen knowing he can get his hands on it and be able to blackmail him, revealing what he had done to his family.
Gabrielle returning and demanding more money will definitely put Stephen on edge, but will he turn violent towards his ex-wife or do as she says?
Coronation Street airs Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 8pm on ITV.
