Coronation Street legend confirms new addition to the Cobbles after sad death

Coronation Street star Dame Maureen Lipman has teased a new arrival In the ITV soap following the death of Evelyn Plummer’s dog Cerberus.

Loyal fans of the long-running soap have been warned to bring tissues in new scenes airing next week which will see the loveable pooch taken to the vet after showing signs of illness.

The emotional scenes take place after Roy Cropper (played by David Neilson) admitted to dropping an Eccles cake in the café during a recent visit when Cerberus was there.

Things only continued to spiral after Evelyn is later devastated to learn that the adorable greyhound will have to be put down after suffering from major kidney failure.

Now, the beloved actor has revealed that a new four-legged friend with arrive on the Cobbles in the wake of Cerberus’ death after Roy found himself stuck with a furry friend.

She explained: “A curious thing happens, someone dumps a dog on Roy. Now, Evelyn doesn’t want to know about this, it is small so she calls this dog a guinea pig with identity issues.

“But between you and me it is the most adorable thing you’ve ever seen, Roy and David are obsessed with this dog.

“He’s tremendously jealous if the dog comes to me first, he’s a man obsessed with this little ball of fluff.”

Despite initially putting up a tough exterior when initially meeting the perfect pooch, Evelyn soon came around to the new addition on the street and even helped Roy to train the little one.

The actress continued: “Evelyn is having nothing to do with it on the surface, but then something happens with Roy which means she has to take the dog for a while but not permanently.

“She tries to teach Roy what you do with a dog because he’s completely soft and clueless. She enrols Roy in her own dog class, which as you can imagine is very dogmatic!”

It comes after loveable character David teased his new café assistant while he supported co-star Mollie Gallagher (who plays Nina Lucas) on Dancing on Ice.

When asked how he has been getting on filming the ITV soap without Mollie, he hinted: “Quite recently, while Mollie has been doing this, I've got a little friend to take her place while she is here.

“I can’t say much because she’s not on screen yet, but I had this little thing on my hand, and it left a little mess.”

Coronation Street airs on weekdays from 8pm on ITV1 and ITVX.
