Coronation Street star William ‘Bill’ Roache is proof that if you have an adventurous aspiration at the back of your mind, why not give it a go if you’re able to?
The actor, best-known for playing Ken Barlow on the ITV soap ever since its premiere in 1960, celebrated his 91st birthday on April 25 this year.
Not one to shy away from unleashing his wild side, the soap legend decided to go skydiving for the first time in his life in a pre-recorded segment filmed for Lorraine.
The sequence was shown on Monday’s programme, with Bill opening to the camera about why he was embarking on the challenge.
Joking that he’d be jumping out of an aeroplane ‘hopefully with a parachute on’ and an instructor with him, the actor admitted that his feelings were ‘all over the place’.
‘But one dominant one is excitement,’ he added, as he was shown practising how to position his body during the skydive while lying on the floor.
He explained that he’s heard other people who have gone skydiving say that it’s ‘the best thing they’ve ever done in their life’.
‘And I’m sure I’ll be joining that group,’ he predicted.
With Lenny Kravitz’s Fly Away playing in the background of the vide, Bill zipped himself up in his blue and yellow suit and put on a harness.
He grinned as sat in the plane, waiting for the moment that he’d take the leap of faith.
Nothing could wipe the smile on his face, even as he was inched out of the aircraft by the instructor strapped to his back.
As the chorus of the song played, Bill and his companion dove out of the plane, spinning upside down as the sun shone above them.
He appeared to attempt to blow a kiss during the dive – but it proved a tricky feat while placing his arms in the correct angular position and with the wind blowing powerfully on his face.
Bill landed on the ground to applause, telling the camera that his ‘breath was taken away’ during the ‘amazing’ stunt.
‘You can’t breathe and it’s quite startling. But then when the parachute opens and you see the glorious view, and that’s lovely,’ he shared.
‘You just slow down and you know how birds feel. It’s really wonderful.’
