Coronation Street’s Maureen Lipman has been speaking about her incredible career as an actress, but has revealed that she once came across a difficult agent who harshly suggested that she should have a nose job!
The iconic actress plays Evelyn Plummer in the ITV soap and recently made a brief departure so she could continue her role as Rose in the West End production.
Maureen, 77, recalled the moment an agent – who secures jobs for the actor they work for – asked to take a look at her figure, and proceeded to make comments about how she looks.
‘I had an agent called Al Packer and after seeing me in a show he said, “I caught your show, I think you have a lot of talent. Take off your coat and show me your figure”‘, she explained to New Magazine.

‘I had a wool knitted herringbone dress on and was perfectly prim and then he said. “Now, let’s talk nose jobs”. A lot of actresses had them and they all came out looking like Miss Piggy. His assistant took me around to someone on Harley Street and he put a compass on my nose.’
The actress went on to say that she debated whether or not to go through with the procedure, but ended up saying no a week before the operation. She revealed that she switched agents and added that ‘the minute you start having work done’, facial expressions change.
Elsewhere, Maureen Lipman had a very good reason to celebrate recently as she managed to bag herself four nominations at this year’s Inside Soap Awards.
The awards ceremony will celebrate the most memorable moments, storylines and performances in Coronation Street, EastEnders, Emmerdale, Hollyoaks, Casualty, Waterloo Road, Home and Away and Doctors from the past year.
Grandmother to Tyrone (Alan Halsall), Evelyn can usually been seen in light-hearted and comedic scenes, but the return of her secret daughter Cassie (Claire Sweeney) sparked a powerful and dark new narrative for her.
Cassie is Tyrone’s biological mother and came face to face with Evelyn after taking drugs and ending up in hospital.
After establishing that Evelyn was living with Tyrone, Cassie told her that she has a right to see her son, but Evelyn maintained the view that all she’d do is ruin Ty’s life, and that he currently believes his real mum is dead.
Maureen’s temporary exit from the ITV soap saw Evelyn and Cassie leave the cobbles, both in agreement that she needed to try and get help for her addiction to drugs.
