Dawn French’s ‘disappointing’ encounter with the Queen Mother
Comedian Dawn French has shared how she and co-star Jennifer Saunders could have died following a gas leak in Spain which left them unable to walk.
Dawn’s new book, The Tw*t Files, details how the French and Saunders double act were working abroad when they were poisoned as they slept.
The 66-year-old wrote: “We made a film for The Comic Strip called A Fistful of Travellers’ Cheques in 1984.
“We were sharing a villa with two bedrooms – Fatty (Jennifer’s nickname from Dawn) and her then-boyfriend in one room and me in the other.
“About five days in, we were called to set.”

She continued: “A car would pick us up at 6am and it was my job to be the alarm.
“I duly woke up and, in an effort not to fall back to sleep, I attempted to sit up.
“What happened next was very odd.”
Dawn went on to recall she felt as though she had been “thwacked in the face” with a frying pan.

She added that she managed to crawl on the floor and Jennifer had done the same, with both women managing to crawl outside.
She continued: “None of us could stand up, so we crawled outside.
“It later transpired that we were being poisoned by a carbon monoxide leak from a faulty boiler.
“I’m pretty sure that, if we hadn’t had that early morning call, we wouldn’t be here now because we wouldn’t have attempted to wake up and the gas would’ve finished us off.”
Thankfully, the two made a full recovery and continued to entertain fans with French and Saunders for decades to come.
However, Dawn recently revealed she was “jealous” of her co-star’s success with her other sitcom, Absolutely Fabulous.
Ab Fab, as it is known, received wide acclaim and soon became a favourite.
The pair had been due to make another series of French & Saunders in 1991 but French and her then husband Lenny Henry adopted a two-week-old baby — their daughter Billie — and French was unable to film.
Speaking during Rylan Clark-Neal’s Ry-Union podcast last year, Dawn admitted: “I got very conflicted about her massive success with Ab Fab. You know when your sister does really well at something?
“You’re like, ‘Oh good for you, good for you… f*** you.'”
