Douglas Henshall has revealed that he could sense the ghosts of those killed in a Catalonia bullring when filming Netflix 's latest thriller Who is Erin Carter?.
The Shetland star, who plays mysterious businessman Daniel in the show, spoke about filming a climactic action scene in a historic bullring – and how he felt that "the ghosts [were] still there".
"That’s one of the fantastic things about being an actor. You’re so lucky to be able to walk back in time and in history," he said. "That bullring isn’t used now because in Catalonia they don’t kill bulls anymore.
"The place is basically a museum, but it hasn’t been touched since it shut. It’s exactly as it was when it closed."
He continued: "We were doing night shoots and when you walk into the middle of it all the ghosts are still there. You can feel everything that’s happened there. It really is quite spectacular especially given the nature of the scene we were shooting. It really added to it."
The 57-year-old stars in Who is Erin Carter – a Netflix drama about a British substitute teacher living in Barcelona with her loving husband and young daughter.
But when Erin is caught in a violent robbery and recognised by one of the assailants, dark secrets from her past threaten the new life she’s built for herself.
On filming in Spain, Douglas admitted that he suffered with his sweating on set. "I didn’t keep in mind that I came from shooting in Shetland to suddenly being in the middle of Barcelona in the summer working in 42 degrees with humidity."
“And you’re filming indoors without air conditioning because otherwise the sound department would pick it up," he added. "I was wearing a suit and given my Scottish complexion, I was afraid at some point I was going to melt into a little puddle on the floor! At times my main focus was just to plead with my sweat glands to behave.”
The Scottish actor is best known for starring as Detective Inspector Jimmy Perez in BBC crime drama Shetland – a role he left last year.
Douglas is also known for playing Professor Nick Cutter in ITV sci-fi series Primeval, from 2007 until 2011, as well as his role of Taran MacQuarrie in Outlander.
Who is Erin Carter? lands on Netflix from Thursday 17th August.
