Eamonn Holmes and Rosie Wright talked about the latest measure on Wednesday’s GB News and were joined by Dan McCroskrie from the Scottish Express, where Eamonn took the opportunity to ask: “Where does the money come from?” Eamonn’s rant was in regards to Sturgeon’s move to ensure tennants won’t have to face rising prices amid the cost of living crisis.
“Let’s turn our attention to Scotland because there was a major announcement yesterday,” Rosie explained.
“Nicola Sturgeon announced a rent freeze across the country until March next year to deal with rising costs of living.”
“She announced the move and she called it a humanitarian emergency,” Eamonn added.
Welcoming Dan to the show, the broadcaster commented: “First of all, I look at something like a rent freeze, and you think, ‘Gosh, that must benefit so many people’.
“But when it comes to Scotland all the time, I think people everywhere else and people in Scotland probably say the same, it’s very well and good, fantastic – I think it’s fantastic, I don’t know.
“But how do you pay for it? Where’s the money coming from?”
“Yeah, on the face of it it seems like a great idea as you said,” Dan agreed.
“38 percent of Scots are in the rental market, a big group of people, but this creates two big problems.
“Firstly, it creates more of a margin for landlords – they’ve got additional costs so the rising costs will inevitably go up because of increases across society.”
He added that landlords will also face more costs but have “no flexibility”.
He pointed out: “Do landlords take properties off the market because they see it as no longer viable?”
