EastEnders fans reckon they’ve ‘worked out’ why Cindy Beale has returned to Walford

EastEnders aired one of its biggest plot twists in years last night (Wednesday) as Cindy Beale was revealed to be alive and well – and masquerading as the missing Rose Knight.

Cindy (Michelle Collins) was last heard of in the BBC soap 25 years ago in 1998, when husband Ian (Adam Woodyatt) was told she had died during childbirth in prison.

Over the years, rumours have swirled that Cindy could one day make a return to Albert Square and in Wednesday's episode, fans' hopes were realised as she was shown to be still alive.

Although viewers only got a brief glimpse of Cindy in the final scene before the episode's end, they are already exchanging theories on why she would come back to Walford – and they think they've cracked it.

Fans can't wait to see the fallout of Cindy confronting Bobby over killing her daughter Lucy in a shocking 2014 storyline and one person tweeted: "I wonder does Cindy/Rose know Lucy & Steven are dead??"

Cindy was shown sipping a glass of wine on a sun lounger in France after the big Knight family reveal that George's (Colin Salmon) wife Rose, who has been missing for nine years and whose police records are blocked, was actually a fake identity for none other than Cindy.

Someone else commented: "We all knew it was Cindy Beale… but I can’t wait for the fireworks from Kathy, Sharon and what does this mean for Bobby? Will Cindy want revenge for Lucy? Is Lucy’s death the reason she abandoned her new family!"

Another viewer wrote: "Bobby is gonna be such a interesting character now just from this cindy twist. i’m so excited for the confrontation between cindy and him about him killing her daughter. also if he dates anna, she’s lucy’s sister. that’s gonna cause some big trauma when he finds out."

One person tweeted: "I'm thinking that Cindy let something slip about her previous life after learning Lucy had died. This leads to her and George arguing as he had no idea she had children. She then walks out and calls witness protection who move her immediately."

Someone else added: "Imagine if the it’s a double twist coming and it turns out Cindy has been with Lucy the last nine years. Three generations of Beales faking their own deaths!"

Ian is also due to return to EastEnders as the explosive new storyline will show that the tumultuous couple are somehow back together and Ian is hopelessly in love again.

Speaking at a press event about her character's return, Michelle said: "Do you know what, I didn’t think they could ever do it. Life is about timing. If it had happened five years ago, I probably would’ve said no.

"Adam and I were both touring and he’d mentioned it to me. I said to my agent, 'Obviously it’s ridiculous, but let’s just go and meet Chris (Clenshaw, EastEnders exec producer)'. And we had this breakfast meeting and he got his laptop out and he reeled it off and we both went, 'Wow.'

"Oh my God. It was incredible. And I was just like, 'actually, maybe this could work'."
