Ahead of Emmerdale’s 50th anniversary week, executive producer Jane Hudson has been telling us what’s in store, and revealing that not all of our favourite characters will make it through the week alive as a storm rages through the village.
‘Some of the soap’s much-loved characters will sadly lose their lives,’ she confirms. ‘There will be a huge storm that will wreak damage on the entire village and change everyone’s lives forever. We will be having some big emotional heartache.’
Jane says that the decision to kill off a character is not something that’s taken lightly. ‘It is always hard to kill a character as someone is losing their job,’ she explains. ‘You don’t want somebody to lose their job. But the nature of soaps means if you want to introduce new characters, then you need to lose old ones.’
The reality is that the death of a character will always have more impact if the character was someone the audience has taken to their hearts.
‘If you are going to do a death in the soap, it can’t be the postman who has had three lines because it doesn’t matter,’ Jane says. ‘A death has got to have an impact not just on the characters but also on the viewers watching.’
It’s not just beloved characters whose deaths can have an impact, though. The death of a villain who meets their deserved end can also be very powerful, and Jane says it’s important to have this variety.
‘Each of our deaths will bring a different emotion,’ she says. ‘The storylines and the impact of what happens will propel us into 2023.’
Who will survive the terrible storm and who will die? Jane isn’t saying, but she promises, ‘We end on a huge cliff-hanger. It is a celebration of what makes soaps great.’
Teasing how these upcoming scenes will impact the future in the village, Laura Shaw added:

‘There will be a lot of high-octane drama and as we all know, there is always drama around Kim Tate! You can expect things to not run smoothly especially as Harriet still has feelings for Will.
‘Faith’s cancer journey takes a rocky turning, which has repercussions for both Cain and Chas. The storylines and the impact of what happens will propel us into 2023.’
