Emmerdale brings back legendary actor after 24 years – but there's a twist

Be still our beating hearts, Robert Beck is staging a comeback to Emmerdale after 24 years.

The TV star, who has appeared in almost all of the nation’s biggest soaps, famously played heartthrob Gavin Ferris, a flame of Bernice Blackstock who bought into the Woolpack, in the ITV soap back in 1999.

Gavin was famously caught out kissing Jason Kirk by Bernice and Tricia Stokes, which led to he and Bernice splitting up, with Gavin departing the village soon afterwards.

Fans had longed for him to return, but despite actor Robert finally staging a comeback after almost 25 years, he won’t be bringing his Dale’s counterpart with him, as he’s playing a completely new role this time around.

Way to break our hearts.

The soap star, who is married to Coronation Street’s Jane Danson, will portray Harry, a dangerous gangster who is an acquaintance of Corey, who goes into business with Cain Dingle in scenes set to air this week.

Nate Robinson, who is worried sick about his finances after Moira cut his hours at the farm, recognises Corey from school and, feeling like a failure in the shadow of his former classmate’s success, asks him for a job.

Corey says he can’t help but Nate confronts him once more to ask for work, finding his old friend in the company of none other than Caleb Miligan, who is the silent investor in the whole thing!

Caleb ultimately offers Nate work in return for his silence, which proves to be the catalyst for the arrival of Harry, played by Beck, as things take a dark turn next week.

Corey explains to eager Nate that there are opportunities to make extra cash on the side and, given his financial situation, Nate is more than happy to sign up for whatever these tasks may entail, with subsequent scenes seeing him meet with client Harry.

Harry is incredibly impressed with Nate, who returns with a big tip, happy to inform Corey that Caleb doesn’t have to know what they’re up to. Caleb, however, suspects that Corey is up to something dodgy, and thus asks Nate to keep an eye on him.

Nate does as he’s told and subsequently discovers that Corey’s deal with Harry isn’t exactly legitimate, though he agrees to keep it quiet for the extra cash.

But he’s soon left spooked when he’s tasked with a dodgy job with Harry and, hoping to get out of it, he warns Corey of Caleb’s suspicions.

Corey, however, resorts to threats, revealing that getting on the wrong side of Harry would be much worse for them.

Will Nate manage to get out of this one? Or is this the beginning of a dangerous and dark storyline for him? That remains to be seen.

This won’t be the first time that Robert, who has also appeared in Coronation Street and Brookside, plays a devilish gangster, having terrified audiences as the evil Fergus Collins in Hollyoaks two years ago.

Fergus was killed by partner Trish Minniver (Denise Welch), who came to the defence of daughter Maxine (Nikki Sanderson), whose life was in danger during the moment in question.

One to watch: Monday August 7 at 7:30pm on ITV1 and ITVX.
