Emmerdale in schedule shake-up as ITV airs hour-long episode to honour 50 years

Emmerdale will celebrate its 50th birthday next month with an hour-long episode, ITV producers have announced.

The special show will air on Sunday October 16, and will be exactly 50 years to the day since the ITV soap first aired in 1972.

To celebrate the special occasion, the show has also revealed an official photograph which includes cast members.

The iconic pic was taken earlier this year outside the Woolpack pub in the Emmerdale village which is located in Yorkshire.

The photograph features everyone from the longest-serving cast members to their newest additions to the ITV show.

The Dingle family dog is also included in the special cast snap.

Discussing the soap, executive producer, Jane Hudson, previously said they endeavour to make the 50th birthday month "a treat for all our loyal viewers" which will have them "gripped to the edge of their seats as the stories unfold".

She also said the storylines will "have you in tears, make you laugh out loud and of course, amaze you with some of the most epic stunts you will have ever seen."

Earlier this year, Emmerdale's cast and producers kicked off the birthday celebrations with a humongous cake in the shape of the show's famous Woolpack pub.

In addition to this, they also released a selection of picturesque photographs of the much-loved village set on the Harewood Estate in West Yorkshire to mark the special event.

The popular ITV show was originally filmed in the real-life village of Arncliffe in the Yorkshire Dales before moving to Esholt in West Yorkshire.

But after 22 years the production moved to the Harewood Estate, where a replica of Esholt was constructed.

However the village became far too busy to film in, with congestion and disruption caused by visits from fans hoping to catch a glimpse of the their favourite characters in action.

The big move took place over Christmas in 1996 – which currently the only time the soap takes a break from filming. The set was then first used in 1997.

But with producers promising an epic episode on the way, the current set won't remain the same as a furious wind storm will rip through the village causing an avalanche of destruction.

As well as the major stunts, Faith Dingle will take her final breath during the month, as she loses her long battle with terminal cancer.
