Meg Johnson, best-known for her performances in programmes including Emmerdale and Coronation Street, has died aged 86.
A statement was released on the social media channels for Emmerdale, who said that the late actress died ‘peacefully’ while ‘surrounded by her family’.
‘It is with great sadness that we announce that actress Meg Johnson passed away peacefully yesterday evening surrounded by her family,’ it read.
‘Meg was a kind and wonderful lady, full of warmth and always with a twinkle in her eye. She will be greatly missed by everyone who knew her.’
Johnson first started playing Pearl Ladderbanks on Emmerdale in 2003, a role she portrayed until her final appearance in 2020.
She also previously starred in Coronation Street, first in a few guest appearances as a character called Brenda Holden in 1976, before being cast as Eunice Gee in 1981.
Tributes have poured in from fans who enjoyed watching her performance as Pearl on Emmerdale over the years.
‘So sad to hear this – she was wonderful as Pearl and was able to be very very funny while also delivering with the more dramatic material,’ one person tweeted.

Another Twitter user who remembered her tenure on Corrie wrote: ‘Sad news! Meg played Eunice Gee on the cobbles in two stints – a brilliant character! We’ll always remember her attempted seduction of Jack Duckworth in her 1999 return!’
Former Emmerdale star Gemma Outen, who played Rachel Breckle on the soap from 2011 to 2015, penned on Instagram: ‘God bless her 🙏 beautiful woman inside and out. Love to her family and the emmerdale family too. She’ll be reet up there with Shirley, Richard, Freddie and so many legends ❤️much love xxx.’
Someone else added: ‘RIP Meg, she was a wonderful actress and was fabulous as Pearl. Always glamorous, and always had heart. Lovely lady, my thoughts are with her family.’
Johnson was married to English actor and Granada ITV television presenter Charles Foster until his death in February 2023.
In addition to her roles in Emmerdale and Corrie, she appeared opposite Victoria Wood in several episodes of her programmes Victoria Wood: As Seen on TV and Victoria Wood Presents.
Johnson also graced the stage in productions of Chicago, Follies and Gypsy, as well as starring in the soap Brookside as Brigid McKenna from 2000 to 2003.
