The revelations just keep coming where Nicky Milligan (Lewis Cope) is concerned in Emmerdale. In Tuesday (June 20)’s episode it was shockingly revealed that he was the one who pushed his father Caleb (William Ash) from the ridge and left him for dead.
Viewers saw Nicky shedding tears at his father’s hospital bedside, saying, ‘I thought I’d killed you.’ Caleb is currently in a coma following the fall that left him with a badly broken leg that needed surgery, hypothermia and swelling in his brain.
Prior to that, the character who arrived at Home Farm to work as a nanny for Gabby (Rosie Bentham)’s son Thomas had been gradually shown to be putting on a complete performance. He was actually on a mission to help Caleb carry through a plan of revenge against Kim Tate (Claire King), the woman Caleb held responsible for the death of his father Frank Tate.
Even while he was romancing Gabby and proposing marriage, viewers were discovering that this was a complete sham – and in fact Nicky is gay and in love with a man called Ally (Josh Horrocks).

Scenes involving Ally showed Nicky at his most authentic, as the two men truly loved each other. This was the version of Nicky that viewers responded to the most, as we could sympathise with the terrible situation Caleb had put his son in as he pressurised him to keep going with the plan to marry Gabby even after he found out about his son’s sexuality.
Lewis Cope told us that Nicky’s feelings for Ally were completely genuine. ‘I think Nicky loves Ally, massively,’ he said. ‘I think he would happily get with him and spend his life with him.’
Sadly, Ally was as shocked by the discovery of what Nicky had been up to as everyone else, so Lewis wasn’t optimistic that a relationship was possible for the couple, at least in the short term.
‘After seeing what Nicky’s been up to, Ally doesn’t seem interested at all and leaves,’ he sighed. ‘So I think it’s actually more on Ally than it is on Nicky.’
Never say never in soap land, of course, and Lewis pointed out that it was Caleb’s manipulation of his son that had led to the entire situation – so perhaps Ally could eventually see that and forgive him.
‘It’s definitely redeemable because I think the lies are not really Nicky’s lies. They’re being fed to him by his dad and I think Nicky’s just been the middle-man for a lot of it. I don’t think they’re actually his thoughts, or his feelings,’ he said.
But assuming Caleb survives, can Nicky escape his father’s influence and make a life for himself that could include Ally?
‘Nicky is scared of Caleb because there have been plenty of scenes where he’ll try to stand up to him, but he never seems to succeed. So he definitely feels inferior to him,’ Lewis admitted.

‘I’d like to think they could resolve it, but from Caleb’s part, Nicky’s not only messed up his whole plan of getting Home Farm, getting revenge and getting money back, he’s also tried to kill him,’ he said. ‘So there’s a mountain to climb before Caleb forgives Nicky, if he survives.’
