Emmerdale’s Wendy Posner actress ‘saved’ by soap after husband’s tragic death

Emmerdale'sSusan Cookson, who plays Wendy Posner in the ITV soap, has revealed that she was "saved" by the show following the death of her husband.

The 58 year old has revealed that she was about to give up on her career after her husband, Malcolm Scates, sadly passed away.

Susan was about to retire and was on her way to see a nursing manager to find out how to retrain in that profession when she got the call from Emmerdale.

The ITV soap offered her the role of Nurse Wendy out of the blue, and it didn't take long for Susan to say yes.

She told The Mirror: "I was at a bit of a crossroads in my life through one thing and another and I decided that I wanted a more regular job. I started to think about changing careers and going into nursing.

"My husband, who is sadly no longer with us, had been very poorly, and I’d nursed him."

The actress then revealed: "I was in my car, about 10 minutes away from this meeting, when my phone went. It was Emmerdale producer Jane Hudson. I worked with her many moons ago on Casualty, but I’d not spoken to her for years."

She finished by saying: "She said to me: ‘Look, I’m going to cut to the chase, we’ve got a new character and there’s nobody I’d rather play it than you. I know you’d be perfect for it."

Susan then revealed that she didn't have to think about her decision and she instantly said "yes" to the role, before she found out that she was playing a nurse.

Susan joined the Dales in 2019, and she has had a tough time in the Yorkshire village.

From her son raping Victoria Sugden to her recent affair with Liam Cavanagh, Wendy has had an eventful few years.

However, away from the village, Susan was married to Coronation Street actor Malcolm Scates from 1993 until his tragic death in 2016.

The couple had two children together, Ruari and Dan, during their period of time living in Sheffield.

As for Malcolm, throughout his years in the acting industry, he had many different roles, including playing five different roles in Corrie.

From 1986 until 2010, he fronted many characters on the cobbles, with his biggest role being Philip Newton who was the big brewery boss.
