Nigel Harman has signed a big-money deal to join Casualty.

We can reveal the former EastEnders star is set to play new staff member Max on the BBC medical drama.

An insider said: "Nigel has signed a one-year contract with the show. It’s really exciting. Producers are thrilled to have such a big name joining the cast."

Nigel has already started filming scenes for his first episode. His debut as Max is due to air in the new year.

Our insider said: "Max is really going to ruffle feathers. He is a loveable rogue who isn’t afraid to say what he thinks.

"The writers have got some really big storylines planned for this character. He’s going to be at the centre of the action."

Nigel is best known for playing Dennis Rickman on EastEnders between 2003 and 2005.

The hunk has also had roles in Downton Abbey, Hotel Babylon and Mount Pleasant.

Execs are hoping Nigel will be TV gold and boost ratings.

Nigel's stint on EastEnders was certainly a memorable one – but it doesn't seem the actor kept track of the role he played quite as well as fans did.

His time on the show was certainly controversial with the character of Dennis having a love affair with his adopted sister Sharon Watts (Letitia Dean).

Although the pair tied the knot, he sadly died when it was revealed Sharon was pregnant with his baby – but despite the interesting twist in their relationship, Nigel forgot a lot of what happened on air.

Appearing on Loose Women earlier this year he told the panellists that he "can't really remember" what happened and he was even shocked to find out that his TV son Denny was killed off.

Chatting with Ruth Langsford, he told the host he was impressed with her knowledge, but she responded with a cheeky quip of: "You obviously don't watch it anymore."

He didn't give a firm answer, but he laughed as he asked her: "What gives you that impression?"

Nigel won't be the only ex EastEnders star to move from Walford to Casualty as he will be joined by Charles Venn and Shaheen Jafargholi.
