Blake Fielder-Civil discusses the upcoming Amy Winehouse biopic
Good Morning Britain faced a huge backlash from viewers over an interview with Amy Winehouse’s ex-husband Blake Fielder Civil, to mark what would have been the singer’s 40th birthday.
Although they had already been divorced for two years, and Blake was in jail for burglary and possession of a firearm at the time of Amy’s death at the age of just 27, his name remains synonymous with the late singer.
Twelve years after the Grammy Award-winning Back to Black singer was found dead at her home in Camden, Blake was asked by host Susanna Reid if he felt people still held him “responsible for what happened to Amy”.
“That’s one of the reasons I wanted to speak today,” he explained.
“Yeah, I do. And that’s OK. I can’t change how other people feel about that. But for me personally I needed to stop carrying that cross on my own,” he reflected.

“I’ve carried my burden myself for over 10 years. I feel, to be honest, that I’m the only person within that story that’s ever held any accountability. That’s ever tried to say, ’yeah I made some huge mistakes.’
“… I was a 20 something year old drug addict so I had no idea how to make myself clean let alone somebody else who was a big cog in a machine for a record label, and there were vested interests in Amy performing,” he said.
Viewers were not impressed in the least and took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to vent.
A user called @BiBetty3 stated: “This interview feels wrong. It’s Amy’s 40th birthday, surely today we should be remembering all Amy’s amazing achievements and her talent today, not raking over her dark past. #GMB.” (sic)
A viewer with the handle @SmokeyToes76 was far more abrupt. “Why are you giving this piece of c*** airtime? On Amy’s birthday too?? Disgraceful #GMB,” they said. (sic)

@karslake7 was concerned for Amy’s loved ones, writing: “B****y awful TV GMB. Hope you ran this thru Amy’s family 1st.” (sic)
@SteveFl11796194 had quite a bit to say on the subject, commenting: “OK Amy Winehouse , don’t dislike her but nowt special, crucified Valerie.. but fed up of people like this getting publicity out of someone’s death , and for GMB for giving these people a platform . This guys a waste of space. Disappear back in to the hole he came from.” (sic)
@DawnSma35307696 felt the interview had no purpose saying: “I don’t really see what the point of this interview was. He admitted he offered class A drugs to her & got her addicted then was trying to dodge the blame from the public.” (sic) Meanwhile @Totts62 simply expressed disappointment, writing: “Not one of GMBs greatest interviews. Expected a lot better.”
While on the show, Blake was also asked if he would be watching the upcoming biopic, which features Jack O’Connell playing him.
However, he admitted he was going to wait to see what people said about it before he watched.
Good Morning Britain is on ITV weekdays from 6-9am.
