Strictly’s Gorka disappointed he didn’t win with Helen Skelton
Gorka Marquez admitted he’d been “upset” about last year’s Strictly Come Dancing result after he and Helen Skelton made it to the final but didn’t win.
While the couple made it to the very end of the BBC competition, they were beaten by Hamza Yassin and Jowita Przystał, who ended up lifting the sought-after Strictly Glitterball trophy.
Gorka confessed he believed he and Countryfile star Helen would be the ones to be crowned winners, telling Show on the Road host Alex Legouix he had been left disappointed last year.
“You’re doing 2023, right?” Alex asked the Spanish dancer on her podcast, “Because there were a lot of rumours that you’re not.”
“No, that’s just rumours,” Gorka replied, adding: “I think because I didn’t win last year and I wanted to win it, and the reaction that I had when I didn’t win it…

“Because do you know what? We thought we were going to win it in that moment, just because of the audience in the room.”
The dancer continued: “When you make the final and you’ve been in the dance-off, you think, ‘OK, we didn’t get the votes from the audience, it’s just difficult.’
“But when you make it all the way to the final without being in the dance-off, you think, ‘Oh, I have the support of the audience…’ so I thought we could win it.”
Paying tribute to reigning champion Hamza, Gorka acknowledged: “Hamza was incredible – through the whole series he was amazing, the numbers he did, it was so incredible and I’m proud and happy for them that they won it.

“But at the same time… it’s like, I want to win it. And yeah my reaction was just the reaction of someone who cares and loves the show and wanted to win for my celebrity, that’s why I was upset and I think I have the right to be upset.
“I’d rather be upset than be like, ‘Oh, whatever.’
“Because that shows I don’t care, and I do care so that’s why that was my reaction.
“But I will never leave the show, I love the show, it’s like the best show on telly and the best job I could dream for.”
