Brothers Prince Harry and Prince William have had a turbulent time in their relationship since Harry and Meghan decided to leave their roles as working royals and move their lives over to California. Despite the tensions between the family, Harry and Meghan joined the family to pay their respects and say goodbye to their grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II. Royal biographer Tina Brown has opened up about the pair reuniting through the hard time and believes it could mend the rift.
Tina joined Lorraine Kelly on her ITV daytime show to discuss the day’s events where Her Late Majesty was laid to rest.
Touching on William and Harry coming together and the possibility of the rift ending, Lorraine expressed: “What about bridges being built?
“We hope, between William and Harry, especially who were once so very close, but just the family generally, use this time to all come together.”
Tina explained: “This is an incredible moment to be used and the country loved that feeling of unity, they loved seeing the brothers back together and marching as well and it really was a beautiful sight to see them all back together.
“Let’s face it, Harry is a magnificent man, he looked wonderful I thought, funnily enough, the fact that he was wearing a civilian suit not uniform… your eye kind of went to him constantly in the crowd.
“But I think unless he gives up his book and these tell-all documentaries type stuff and stops doing the interviews then there can be no trust.
“If he does that I think there is very much a way and I do actually think the royal family now needs them, there is a lot of work to be done.”
Touching on the new roles that Kate Middleton will have as the Princess of Wales, Tina added: “Kate does not want to be spending her time travelling the world.
“She’s a mother of three children, as the Suessexes are, so somehow has to divvy this up and Harry has a role to play if he wants to now.
“Come in and do it and the question is of course, (if) Meghan wants to because she absolutely hated every bit of it.”
Concerned about Meghan’s previous dislike for the working aspect of the family, Lorraine expressed: “I know but I am just wondering, she was here and saw the reaction of the crowds and the goodwill.
“All of these things that maybe on both sides there could be a compromise and they can come together.
“The biggest compromise would be that he bins the book or completely rewrites it, we don’t know what is in it but presumably it isn’t going to be great for the royals.
“So if he does that is a fresh page and they can start again.”
Agreeing, Tina explained: “A fresh page and then there should be a compromise, they can spend four or five months of the year in California as they wish.
“But actually he has got a role and I think they should make that compromise, the question is whether they have each got the give to do it.
“Family can go very deep (but) if Harry doesn’t want to bin the book then I don’t see a way forward.”
Lorraine concluded: “Which will be very sad because the two of them were such… could be a force for good and still could be.”
Both brothers have shared tributes, with Harry saying his family can smile knowing the Queen is “together in peace” with her husband Prince Philip.
He also said he would “honour” his father King Charles III – who mentioned him and his wife Meghan in his first address to the nation as King.
