Announcement trailer for Harry Potter Max original series
JK Rowling’s Wizarding World was one of the UK’s most beloved creations, and Warner Bros’ original eight Harry Potter films have become some of the highest-grossing cinematic hits of all time. However, recent attempts to spin off the series have not been so successful, with the newly announced project from HBO Max – now rebranded Max – catching similar backlash.
Max’s upcoming Harry Potter adaptation – which has been confirmed to have a 10-year and seven-season commitment in place – is already under fire from fans threatening to boycott the streamer.
Some fans have pointed out the series is already leaning heavily on the popularity of the original films, such as using the same logo, castle, and iconic theme music by John Williams.
Author Rowling has also become a controversial figure due to her alignment with ‘gender critical’ groups and divisive views on the transgender community.
Actor Daniel Radcliffe, who portrayed the Boy Who Lived in the original film series, and Emma Watson – who played Harry’s best friend Hermione – have since both come out in support of the LGBTQ+ community and transitioning young people in opposition to the writer.
So the announcement of another series set within the Wizarding World has incited calls to boycott the franchise – in a similar fate to video game Hogwarts: Legacy earlier this year.
@lavfeysun tweeted: “Once again I’m begging you all: don’t stream this.
“Don’t give any more time, attention, or money to anything Harry Potter related.
“JK Rowling has been reported to be profiting off of this. It’s all a money grab for fear of losing relevance.”
Lella Yasmine wrote: “Let me be real: They’re adapting Harry Potter again because it’s guaranteed to bring them money.
“There’s no point dancing around it or asking why they didn’t adapt this or that book. If you want to make an actual difference, boycott and show the industry this franchise is dead.”
@realkeig said: “I think we should all boycott the Harry Potter reboot. Collectively. Until they cancel the reboot.
“Officially. I am so serious about this. Some things just shouldn’t be touched. LEAVE HARRY ALONE!”

And @ZACHAZAR8 said: “I will not be watching this series. It’s both unnecessary and a cash grab.
“I’d rather a new story set in the Wizarding World be told. Not a rehash of what came before. All I can do is boycott this series and I will.”
But @wanderinsouI argued: “Twitter thinks they can boycott a Harry Potter series into cancellation like the HP game isn’t a huge success….”
And @salacious_v was also supportive, writing: “If JK Rowling is in charge of the new Harry Potter TV series then there’s a chance it will be good.”
“I wonder if leftists will try to boycott HBO like they tried with Netflix after Dave Chappelle got a show on Netflix. Keep in mind HBO also gave us The Last Of Us masterpiece.”
Rowling is confirmed to be executive producing the series, though it’s unknown if she will be taking on a creative role similar to her work writing the scripts for the Fantastic Beasts films.
The reboot will feature an entirely new cast, with each season set to adapt one of Rowling’s original novels.
