Maxine is a dramatisation of the 2002 Soham Murders which saw school caretaker Ian Huntley sentenced to life for killing Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman, who were both aged 10, and had been on their way home from buying sweets. While his fiancée Maxine Carr was found guilty of perverting the course of justice and found not guilty of assisting an offender, receiving a sentence of three-and-a-half years but only serving 21 months. Maxine will tell the chilling story from Carr’s point of view with the programme-makers and writers carrying out extensive research while putting through the scripts together.
Who is in the cast of Maxine?
Maxine Carr – Jemma Carlton
Jemma Carlton portrays Maxine Carr with the drama marking her first screen part, according to IMDb.
Speaking about taking on the lead, Carlton said: “Maxine is one of those roles that when it lands in your inbox, you don’t ignore it. It’s a kind of a once in a lifetime role.
“I knew that there would be difficulties that came with it, but I got a lot of reassurance from Channel 5 and [director] Laura [Way] that the project was going to be handled with a lot of care.
“Over the years, I’ve been drawn to performances like David Tennant in Des [which followed the story of serial killer Dennis Nilsen] and Maxine Peake [who played child killer Myra Hindley], and so I felt Maxine was a mountain to climb as a part, but wanted to see how I can push myself in a complex real life role.”
She went on to say a “huge amount” of research went into the part given it was her TV debut and she wanted to ensure the tone was “right”.
As part of the role, Carlton also watched many documentaries on Carr and was given a ‘bible’ of cuttings and information on the case she could draw from in her performance.
The actress said about getting into character: “It was a really interesting process. Physically it of course starts with the hair and makeup and then we go to the voice and movement. I’m from the West Midlands Maxine is from the East Midlands, so getting those details right was so important.
“She moves very differently to me, so getting into the right posture of being more delicate in the way I held myself was key.”
Ian Huntley – Scott Reid
Scott Reid plays killer Ian Huntley with the actor most recognisable for his roles in Line of Duty, ITV’s White House Farm, Still Game, and Amazon Prime Video’s Carnival Row.
Reid admitted he had a bit of “trepidation” taking on the role of Huntley. He said: “I discussed it with my family and the reassurance came from the team that the project was approached with such due diligence and care and towards the families of the victims.
“From an acting perspective, I looked through the history of actors that I respect and look up to and the performances they’ve given like David Tennant who played Dennis Nilsen.
“There’s a reason why these sorts of stories need to be told. It’s a reminder of the darkness in our society.”
