All Creatures Great and Small continues to be a huge hit and the escapist family drama has been an emotional rollercoaster this year. James Herriot (played by Nicholas Ralph) has felt torn between serving his country if war breaks out, and his work at Skeldale House. Express.co.uk has all you need to know about the show’s future as the season three finale arrives.

Is there a season 4 of All Creatures Great and Small?

All Creatures Great and Small season three is coming to an end with James facing more trouble with the TB testing.

He feels stuck in the middle as although he wants to keep in the Ministry of Agriculture’s good books, he has his new family with Helen (Rachel Shenton) to think about.

Meanwhile, Mrs Hall (Anna Madeley) becomes attached to an abandoned dog left outside Skeldale House.

Tristan has finally opened his eyes and seen how he no longer wants to live in Siegfried’s (Samuel West) shadow.

As for what is next for the series, another Christmas special will air later this year.

Filming for the festive episode has already taken place and it is likely to air in late December.

When it comes to season four, Channel 5 has already renewed the show for another series.

The show was inspired by Alf Wight’s books of the same name and there is plenty of source material left to use.

The renewal came back in January 2022, as seasons three and four were announced at the same time.

Sebastian Cardwell, Deputy Director of Programmes at ViacomCBS Networks UK said at the time: “It is clear that our viewers adore James Herriot’s adventures in Darrowby and so do we at Channel 5.”

The author’s children, Jim Wight and Rosie Page, released a joint statement after the announcement of a third and fourth series.

They said: “For many years the books of James Herriot have provided a source of comfort to tens of thousands of people worldwide at difficult times in their lives.

“With this recent adaptation of his books, a new generation has been introduced to the joys of the Herriot stories.

“We are delighted that there are to be at least two more series of All Creatures Great and Small, and we are especially pleased that the same excellent actors and producers are to be involved.”

Jim and Rosie have been working closely with the cast to bring their parents’ stories to life once more.

James actor Nicholas explained how Rosie shed a tear when she saw Helen playing her mother on her big day.

The star has already said what he would love to see happen for James in future episodes of the hit show.

Speaking to Express.co.uk and other press, he said he would love for James to have children with Helen.

He said: “Yeah, absolutely, definitely. Yeah, I can’t wait to see how things like that pan out.

“And of course, there’ll be many complications along the way, as well. Especially with the war looming in the background and things like that.”

As for when fans can expect season four to arrive, the series has a track record of airing in September.

So following on from the Christmas special later this year, viewers can expect new episodes around mid-September 2023.

Each season is made up of six episodes and this will be the case for the new outing, despite viewers’ calls for more.
