McGrillis studied performing arts at Northumbria University and her early career saw her land stage roles in The Pitmen Painters in London’s National Theatre and then move to Broadway as well as a production of Much Ado About Nothing at Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre.
She is married to fellow actor and Jamestown and Babylon star Stuart Martin with the couple having two children.
Previously speaking to the Radio Times about her role in Sex Education, McGrillis said Joanna was a “bit of a whirlwind” and it was a “fun part to play”.
McGrillis admitted she was a huge fan of the Netflix series and had “never been more nervous” about working on a show in her life.
She continued to the publication: “This is the fourth series of one of the most popular shows on Netflix, playing Gillian Anderson’s sister.
“Everyone is obsessed with Jean Milburn. So, I was terrified.”
Adding: “I felt like I was having an out of body experience when I arrived on set at that iconic house.”
She went on to say how it took her about “three days” to stop being “super starstruck” while working on Sex Education.
