Inside Marlon Dingle’s biggest Emmerdale storylines including affair with cousin

Emmerdale: Marlon pleads with Paddy not to take his own life

Over the years, Emmerdale fans have seen Marlon Dingle (played by Mark Charnock) involved in some of the soap’s most dramatic storylines.

Making his Yorkshire Dales debut in the late 90s, the actor first appeared on screens as a fresh-faced 26-year-old.

His loveable role in the ITV soap is often associated with one of the more humorous characters in Emmerdale after his many hilarious mishaps.

However, fans have also seen Marlon involved in some harrowing and dramatic storylines throughout the years.

As the actor celebrates his 55th birthday, Express.co.uk have decided to delve into his role as Marlon Dingle which he’s played for nearly half his life.

Marlon and Charity’s affair

Although he’s had a string of relationships, many fans may have forgotten he once had a one-night stand with his own cousin.

The brief fling happened in 2003 with Charity Dingle (Emma Atkins) after she had discovered her husband had framed her for his murder.

Although it transpired that he had died by suicide, Charity was released on bail and moved in with her cousin, Marlon.

As he was missing his wife Tricia Stokes (Sheree Murphy), who was in India for six months filming a Bollywood film, Marlon became extremely lonely.

When Charity moved in, the pair had a few too many drinks and ended up sleeping together which later resulted in a pregnancy scare.

However, fans were relieved when it was revealed he wasn’t the father of Noah Dingle (Jack Downham) but it was her late husband’s child.

In 2022, Emmerdale fans watched in horror as they witnessed Marlon suffer a terrifying stroke.

Whilst on his way to pick up an engagement ring for Rhona Goskirk (Zoë Henry), his vision went blurred and his mouth drooped to one side.

Unable to call for help, he was discovered by his young daughter April on the floor as she sprang into action and rang for an ambulance.

As doctors confirmed he had had a stroke and would have to have an operation to remove a clot from his brain, his future in the show looked uncertain.

Luckily, Marlon survived and has been dealing with the physical effects of the health scare for the past year.

Mark Charnock’s performance was so moving he was awarded the Outstanding Achievement accolade at the British Soap Awards this year.

Speaking about the storyline, the actor said: “The really interesting part of this for me, was the research.

“I was overwhelmed by the numbers. Every five minutes in the UK somebody has a stroke. What I hope this storyline will do is alert people to the symptoms.”

Marriage breakdown and infidelity

Despite his best efforts to stop his wife from finding out about his fling with Charity, Tricia soon discovered the betrayal and decided to call it a day on their relationship.

Although after his attempts to win her back, she eventually forgave him after he wrote her a heartfelt letter.

However, when a storm hit the village in 2003, disaster struck when some of the roof from the Woolpack fell on her.

After she was airlifted to hospital, Tricia suffered a cardiac arrest and was declared brain dead.

Heartbroken, Marlon made the tough decision to turn off her life support but found love the following year with Donna Windsor (Verity Rushworth).

Although their relationship remained steady for years, she had an affair with Ross Barton (Michael Parr) which Marlon couldn’t get past.

Fleeing the village to start a new life in 2009, she returned five years later with Marlon’s four-year-old daughter, who he had no clue existed.

Paddy Kirk bromance and betrayal

Emmerdale fans often praise the friendship between Marlon and Paddy Kirk (Dominic Brunt), especially with Paddy’s mental health taking a turn this year.

However, the duo have had their fair share of ups and downs, especially when Marlon locked lips with Chas Dingle (Lucy Pargeter) whilst Paddy was in love with her.

Falling out for quite some time, they eventually made up and Marlon rekindled his romance with Rhona in 2010.

Although when she showed an interest in Paddy, their friendship faced crisis once again when Rhona and Paddy decided to get together.

Realising she was pregnant at the time with Marlon’s baby, the trio put their differences aside and banded together when Rhona decided to keep the baby after learning it had Down syndrome.

Once Leo was born, a small custody battle happened which saw the two men involved in a fight and arrested.

In the end, they put their differences aside with Paddy and Rhoda splitting in 2015 as she decided to go back to Marlon with the pair marrying after his stroke.

However, it looks as though the pair are at loggerheads once again as Paddy has let him down after offering to help him adjust to getting back behind the wheel after his health scare.
