Vigil: Suranne Jones stars in trailer for BBC drama series
ITV series Maryland tackles the subject of grief and Suranne Jones, who plays Becca, said she used her own experiences to help create the story.
“I think it’s no secret that I’ve lost both my parents. So obviously, I know grief.
“That was a huge part of our conversations, ‘What that is to someone’.
“It’s either going to come or people have experienced it, and I think what this show does is it doesn’t deal with it quickly, it deals with it over three episodes,” she told Radio Times.
The 44-year-old actress was born Sarah Anne Akers, but is known professionally as Suranne Jones.
Born in Greater Manchester, she has an older brother called Gary and was brought up as a Catholic.
Her change of name reportedly came after her priest suggested to her parents she be christened Sarah Anne instead of Suranne, claiming Suranne “was not a proper name”.
Suranne also cited her Catholic upbringing as the potential cause of her phobia of wrists, known as carpophobia.
She said the fear could have stemmed from seeing pictures of Jesus’ crucifixion as a child.

The star has previously spoken out about the bullying she experienced as a child, having studied at a Catholic school.
In a Q&A with The Guardian, she said: “I was bullied at school and I let that get hold of me and withdrew into myself — I regret letting that happen.”
“I think I always wanted to be different and felt very stifled at school,” she went on to tell The Herald.
Her first acting role was aged eight in Wait Until Dark, in which she played Gloria.
She went on to have guest roles in Coronation Street and auditioned for the role of Charity Dingle in Emmerdale.
After becoming one of the final four actresses considered, the part was given to Emma Atkins.
One of her biggest breakout roles was in Doctor Foster in 2015 and it was one of her award-winning performances.
She went on to star in Gentleman Jack and Vigil and is currently working on a new project called The Final Round.
The star and mother-of-one lives in London with her husband, Laurence Akers, who is a freelance scriptwriter.
The pair had met at a friend’s wedding and they tied the knot in 2014, with the actress’ legal name becoming Sarah Anne Akers.
Maryland airs on ITV at 9pm from May 22.
