Happy Valley’s James Norton defends nudity in new role
Happy Valley was nominated for Best Returning Drama at the National TV Awards but fans noticed that a key member of the cast was missing and not mentioned.
Taking to the stage, Ishia Bennison, who plays Joyce in the series, said: “When we came back after the first two brilliant series, we weren’t sure how it would be received.We were completely overwhelmed with the reception.”
After saying her thank yous it wasn’t long before her attention turned to the main actress in the show.
She added: “Our phenomenal cast, who are led by this outstanding woman to my right. She sets the bar so high, that we all want to be up there with her.”
Many fans were left confused over James Norton, who played Tommy Lee Royce, not being at the ceremony nor being mentioned.

@SooozeKerr tweeted: “Bit of a snub to James Norton ? Well Deserved tho #HappyValley #NTAs #NTAs2023 #NTA2023 #NationalTelevisionAwards.”
@carolinefoulis added: “Well that’s it. No James Norton so I’m off! #NTAs.”
@Lockiebaws asked: “Eh 1 who are you hen? And 2 nobody even mentioned James Norton #nationaltelevisionawards.” (sic)
Speaking in the winner’s room, Sarah Lancashire, who plays Catherine Cawood, was quizzed on where James was and admitted: “I believe James will be on stage.
“We are missing a few vital people, James Norton of course, Siobhan Finneran, they’re all working…their filming schedules. They just can’t be here.”

Sarah also once again shut down any rumour of the series returning and said: “It was a story told as a trilogy which has been a great way to tell a story arch.
“The danger is you carry on and it losses its potency but I think this way it keeps it on top.”
Sarah also won Best Drama Performance for her role as Catherine Cawood where she paid tribute to writer and producer Sally Wainwright.
When asked if she thinks her casting will encourage more storylines starring older females, the 58-year-old actress said: “I do hope.
“I think things are changing and they’ve needed to change for a long time, evolution is slow but we’re catching up.”
