Judi Dench emotional recalling husband’s death
Oscar-winning actress Dame Judi Dench was the guest on Louis Theroux Interviews to discuss her career spanning over six decades as well as her plans for the future. The 88-year-old also shared a softer side with BBC Two viewers when she opened up about her husband Michael Williams’ death. Dame Judi found it difficult to speak about losing her husband of 30 years when Louis brought him up in conversation.
The interview took a sombre turn when Louis asked Dame Judi about her marriage to British actor Michael.
“Are you okay talking about how it came to an end and how he came to die?” Louis said. “I don’t want to mention it…”
The actress started to explain Michael was not well before she struggled to talk about his death further.
“I’m not good at it actually,” Dame Judi said as she fought back tears and tried to compose herself in front of Louis.
She looked downwards and clutched at a tissue as Louis sat beside her during the emotional moment.
Dame Judi later summoned the strength to say: “Yes, he died in 2001 of lung cancer. Smoking you see, all that smoking when we were young.
“I was in New York and they said he was not well so my agent flew out and we came back on a Concord the next day and it aborted take off.
“We got off and got back on the next day and thought it would be all right and we got on another plane and the same thing happened.
“So it took us a long time to get back, but we did get back and we were all in the house together and that was very good indeed.”
She paused as she reflected on the heartbreaking loss before Louis asked if she immersed herself in her work following Michael’s death.
“At least you are getting on and thinking of something else,” Dame Judi explained.
Dame Judi and Michael worked on screen together, mostly in the sitcom A Fine Romance.
