Katie Price has opened up about her mental health struggles revealing that she attempted suicide during a period of severe depression.
The 44-year-old former glamour model shared her overwhelming ordeal in an emotional Channel 4 documentary, Katie Price: Trauma and Me, which aired on World Mental Health Day on Monday night.
‘I hit severe depression a couple of years ago, depression on top of PTSD, I was suicidal, didn’t want to be here,’ Katie told the camera.
‘I tried to kill myself. I knocked myself out and had black eyes. I had bruises around my neck. I woke up. I didn’t want to be here.’
Katie said that she entered The Priory rehab clinic to treat her post-traumatic stress disorder and that therapy has helped her to deal with her past and learn what triggers her.
‘I’ve been thinking a lot about my mental health,’ she admitted. ‘I thought I had to manage it on my own and after years of neglect I had a mental breakdown in 2018 and was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder.
‘It goes far back as well, I got raped in a park when I was seven.’
Katie’s mother, Amy stressed that her daughter isn’t a ‘bad girl’. ‘She’s just been hurt too much and taken on too much and been controlled too much,’ she insisted.
After attending her court hearing, Katie shared: ‘I’ve decided to see a therapist every week for the rest of my life. Mental health is cruel, people don’t understand it, you can’t see it. I need help.’
Katie’s heartbroken mum added: ‘Katie asked why she was still alive, so I’m not sure if she was attempting suicide. It was a cry for help. As a mum it’s devastating, you never want to see your child go through this.’
Elsewhere, Katie talked about her drink-driving accident in September 2021, which saw her flip her uninsured BMW X5 near her country home in West Sussex.
After the crash, she was handed a suspended sentence and given a 16-week prison sentence, suspended for 12 months, with 100 hours of unpaid work and 20 rehabilitation activity requirement sessions to be completed within the next 12 months.
Katie was also disqualified from driving for two years and ordered to pay £85 costs.
Lee, the man who found the mum-of-five in her flipped car, said: ‘Katie was hysterical, she told me she didn’t want to be here, I’ve had enough. I gave her a cuddle and reassured her.’
Katie added: ‘The way I was, I didn’t care if I died. A police officer took a photo of my car and put it on Twitter.’
Viewers were left devastated by Katie’s heart-wrenching story and praised her for speaking so frankly about her mental health.
One wrote: ‘Absolutely loved watching @KatiePrice trauma and me on @Channel4. It’s something I could relate to , I feel for Katie people need to start being kinder to her she’s only human and a vulnerable human at that.’
Echoing a similar sentiment, another penned: ‘So proud of you for speaking out. You have come so far. Always got your back 💖 You will get through this one day at a time, i’ll be here for you always 💖 Love you.’
