Ken Bruce insists there’s ‘no hard feelings’ after Radio 2 exit

Ken Bruce has no hard feelings after leaving BBC Radio 2

Ahead of his new show, Ken Bruce joined Lorraine Kelly on her self-titled ITV chat show to explain why he left BBC Radio 2 and how he feels about joining Greatest Hits Radio. Ken insisted he had “no hard feelings” about leaving the BBC despite being embroiled in an ageism row.

Lorraine remarked: “And look, no hard feelings with the Beeb? you were there for such a long time it was a huge part of your life, massive part of your life.”

“Absolutely not,” Ken insisted.

The ITV host continued: “You know I think it’s great you wanted to have a challenge.”

“That’s right, there is a time in your life where you say, ‘Do I keep on doing this forever and ever and watch a slow decline?'” Ken laughed.

“Or, do you give yourself a kick up the backside and try something new.

“I mean, it’s not brand new because I’m more or less doing the same thing but it’s a different environment and a commercial station which I’ve never worked on before.

“So it will be a little challenge but enough of a challenge to keep me on my toes.”

It comes after the broadcaster shared he was “annoyed” he was asked to leave the BBC three weeks earlier than planned.

He told The Times: “I was annoyed because I thought, ‘I’m reasonable. I’m not being difficult. Neither were you…’

“I think the idea is just to create a bit of space between me and Vernon starting.”

Ken is also positive about his replacement on Radio 2, Vernon Kay, describing him as a “fabulous guy, a lovely character and a great presenter”.

“He will be a different act, which is a good thing,” he added.

“Never put the same kind of person into the job that has just been vacated.”

Ken also noted he wasn’t impressed with being pressured into playing music from new pop artists.

He remarked: “I am 72 I would really quite like to spend the next few years playing really terrific music from a set of decades I am entirely comfortable with.

“There comes a point when you can’t really enthuse about the latest release by Ava Max.”

Lorraine airs weekdays on ITV from 9am and Ken’s new show on Greatest Hits Radio begins on April 3.
