NBC’s procedural drama Law and Order SVU has been a huge hit since it first premiered in 1999. Its loyal fans will be in for heartbreak next week as the show is in for a scheduling shake-up and won’t return to screens in its usual slot.
Since the show first landed on NBC fans have tuned in each week to watch Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay) and the SVU team crackdown on crime.
In the Special Victims Unit, the detectives work together to investigate crimes involving sexual assault, the very young or the very elderly.
While there are oftentimes they deal with cases which include all three, the SVU team also deals with murder, abduction, robbery and child pornography cases.
As well as the gripping scenes of the investigation, Law and Order SVU also explores the personal lives of its characters.
However, this won’t be the case next week as the drama will go on a hiatus, which means fans will have to wait one week to see its fifth episode, Breakwater.
Instead of it airing in its usual slot on the 20th, the instalment will premiere on October 27th.
Thankfully, viewers will not be left completely in the dark as bosses released a synopsis for the upcoming episode.
It read: “A young man asks the SVU for help when he suspects his boss is preying on his sister; Velasco tries to convince a reluctant witness to testify in court.”
This is the same for the entire franchise as its spin-off Law and Order OC and its original series Law and Order will also be delayed until October 27.
As the entire franchise airs back to back it’s unsurprising that all three shows would be delayed at the same time.
As well as logistical reasons, shows usually go on hiatus to meet the important rating periods in November, February and May.
Although Law and Order SVU is a long-running series, the ratings are still essential as it determines whether or not the show will be renewed for another season.
Another reason behind the show’s delay could be because of the major crossover which took place during the premiere.
The two-hour crossover event launched the premiere for all three seasons and began with the characters of the franchises working together to solve the murder of a young girl.
As this was a mammoth task, the show many need a hiatus to bank more stories behind the scenes.
One major storyline which fans are dreading is the departure of the beloved detective Amanda Rollins (Kelli Giddish).
After she was shot during an undercover mission, it became clear Amanda was dealing with PTSD and was struggling to move forward after the shooting.
Fans have been gearing up to say goodbye to her as it was announced her final episode would take place on December 8.
Kelli released a statement on Instagram about her departure, which read: “Playing Rollins has been one of the greatest joys and privileges of my life, I’ve been so fortunate to be a part of the Law & Order family for the last 12 years.
“There is simply no other character on TV like Rollins. She’s grown and changed, and I have as well. I started on this show when I was in my late 20s and I’m grateful I got to spend so many of my adult years with Rollins in my life.”
Law and Order SVU season 24 returns to NBC on Thursday, October 27.
